2 Become 1 Spice Girls

Song Title: 2 Become 1

Artist: Spice Girls

Date of release: 16th of December 1996 (UK), 25th of July 1997 (US)

Description: ” 2 Become 1 ” is by the Spice Girls, the English pop girl group formed in 1994. The Spice Girls consisited of Melanie Brown ( Scary ), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty ), Emma Bunton ( Baby ), Geri Halliwell ( Ginger ), and Victoria Beckham ( Posh ).
The song was written by the Spice Girls along with Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard, both Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard produced the song.
” 2 Become 1 ” was released on the 16th of December in the United Kingdom and on the 25th of July in the United States. Both releases were on the Virgin record label, the song was taken as the third single from the girls debut Album ” Spice “.
After writing more uptempo tracks like ” Wannabe “, the group and producers Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard decided to write a more gentle tempo ballad.
However as they began to write ” 2 Become 1 ” they felt it was a bit on the slushy side. They then decided to write the song about the importance of safe sex and contraception using lyrics like ” Be a little bit wiser baby. Put it on, put it on “. the actual true meaning escaped most of the young fans at the time, with many happily singing the lyrics in front of their parents at home.
Inspiration for the song came from a developing relationship between Geri Halliwell and producer Matt Rowe. A hint to the relationship was given by Melanie Brown in her autobiography. In it she said ” When he [Rowe] and Geri started making eyes at each other I knew what was going on, even though they denied it. I knew them both too well for it to be a secret for me “.
Lyrically the song’s main focus is on the bonding between two lovers that become so strong they almost become a single entity, through sexual intercourse.
Apart for the references to sex, the undercurrent of the lyrical content has a message that is aspirational.
” 2 Become 1 ” generally went down well with music critics. While reviewing the Spice Album, Yahoo’s Dev Sherlock called the song a ” glossy ballad that would do Mariah Carey proud “.
Larry Flick’s review for Billboard magazine, commented that ” they are surprisingly adept at weaving warm and romantic imagery over a sweet melody “.
However Whitney Pastorek, writing for Entertainment Weekly, wrote that the song was ” too slow, and the lyrics appear to have been written by a safe-sex-loving unicorn “, also adding that ” it’s almost impossible to identify the individual Spice Girls by their voices here, so airbrushed are the proceedings “.
The song was a commercial success for the Spice Girls. However due to the Dunblane Primary School shootings in Scotland the song’s release was delayed so the charity single ” Knocking on heaven’s door ” could stay at Number One in the UK. After a week ” 2 Become 1 ” was released and went straight in at the top of the UK chart, becoming the third song by the group to be Number One and their first Christmas chart topper in the country.
The song spent 3 weeks at the top and 4 weeks in the top ten, in total it spent 23 weeks on the UK chart.
In Ireland the girls enjoyed their second Number One with this song, the first of their single to make its debut at the top of the Irish singles chart. ” 2 Become 1 ” held the top position for 6 weeks and was their first Christmas Number One in that country.
In the United States the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at number 6, from there it climbed to peak at number 4. ” 2 Become 1 ” became the girls third consecutive single to reach the top 5 there.
