” 7 Seconds ” is by Youssou N’Dour, the Senegalese singer, songwriter and Neneh Cherry ( Neneh Mariann Karlsson ) the Swedish-born singer-songwriter and rapper. The song was written by Youssou N’Dour, Neneh Cherry, Cameron McVey and Jonathan Sharp.
The song was produced by Christian Falk, Booga Bear and Jonny Dollar. Christian Falk was a Swedish record producer who had a 2008 Top Forty hit in the United Kingdom with ” Dream On “. Christian Falk passed away at 52 on the 24th of July 2014 from pancreatic cancer.
Booga Bear ( Cameron McVey ) is a British songwriter and music producer; he married Neneh Cherry in 1990. Jonny Dollar ( Jonathan Peter Sharp ) is an English record producer and songwriter. He worked with Massive Attack and co-wrote the single “Unfinished Sympathy”.
” 7 Seconds ” was released by record label Columbia on the 7th of June 1994. It also features on Youssou’s album, The Guide ( Wommat ). In 1996 the song was included on Neneh Cherry’s album, Man.
The song uses three different languages ( trilingual ), they are French, English and Wolof. The language of Wolof is from Senegal, the Gambia and Mauritania. It is also the language of the Wolof people who are made up of mostly Sunni Muslims.
Neneh said in an interview ” They told us to translate it to English so that everybody can understand what it’s about, but not everybody speaks English. ”
Written as an anti-racism song it talks about how racism is not formed in newborns but comes later when a child grows up and is aware of the broader World.
On Neneh’s website, she explained the song’s meaning ” ‘ 7 Seconds ‘ tells about first seven seconds in the life of a newborn, arguably unaware of problems in the world. ”
Youssou N’Dour and Neneh Cherry recorded the duet at the Power Play Studios located in Long Island, New York. The video was directed by Stéphane Sednaoui, the French director. She has worked with artists including The red hot chilli peppers, U2, Madonna and Kylie Minogue.
The video, shot in black and white, features both Youssou and Neneh singing as people of different ethnicities walk past, as they sing the chorus various people’s faces appear.
” 7 Seconds ” was a commercial success. In France, the song entered the French singles chart at number forty-nine and quickly climbed to reach Number One. It held the top spot for sixteen consecutive weeks and spent a total of forty-one weeks on the chart there.
In Italy, it held the top spot for nine consecutive weeks and was also Number One in Switzerland for two weeks, staying on the chart for thirty-one weeks in that country. The single also made the top three in several countries including Sweden, Portugal, Germany, The Netherlands, Australia, Russia and Poland.
In the United States, the song peaked at number ninety-eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent four weeks on the chart there.
” 7 Seconds ” entered the UK Singles Chart in the United Kingdom on the 25th of June 1994, peaking at number three. It spent six weeks in the Top Ten and remained on the UK chart for twenty-seven weeks.
