9 to 5 Dolly Parton
Song Title: 9 to 5
Artist: Dolly Parton
Date of release: November 1980
Description: ” 9 to 5 ” is by Dolly Parton, the American country music singer and song-writer. Written and performed by Dolly for the hit 1980 comedy film that shared the name with the single’s title. The single was released as the main single from the Album ” 9 to 5 & Odd Jobs “, released in the same year.
Dolly wrote the song for the comedy film in which she also made her acting debut, as her first stab as an actor Dolly held her own in the company of Oscar and Emmy winning actresses, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
The film used the title from the 1970’s organization 9to5 which was set up to fight for the rights of women in the workplace, the organization is still going today some 40 years later.
With hit singles under her belt, acting seemed to be the next logical step in her career, playing the dipsey secretary without any formal training, Dolly proved she had a talent for acting along with writing and performing hit records.
Success for the single soon followed a successful run for the film, Dolly was nominated for an Academy Award and four Grammy nominations in the ” Best Country Song ” and ” Best Country Vocal Performance, Female ” categories.
The single ” 9 to 5 ” became a huge commercial success for Dolly reaching the number one slot in both the US and Canada and top ten positions in Sweden and New Zealand.
In the United Kingdom the song didn’t fare quite so well with only a number 47 and a 13 week stay on the charts in total. However all is not lost in the UK for Dolly, as ” 9 to 5 ” is her 3rd most downloaded song ever in the country.
This song is only the second time a woman has topped both the US Country singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at the same time since the 1968 hit ” Harper Valley PTA ” by Jeannie C. Riley.
A few months before the release of both the film and single by Dolly, another artist released a single with the same name in the UK. To avoid confusion ” 9 to 5 ” by Scottish singer Sheena Easton was changed to become ” Morning Train (Nine to Five) “, itself becoming a big hit.
