Their first single ” Who Needs Love Like That ” was released on the 2nd of September 1985, only moderately successful it reached number 55 on the UK Singles Chart and number 8 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs Chart in the United States.
Andy Bell ( Andrew Ivan “ Andy ” Bell ) grew up in Dogsthorpe, which is a residential area in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire in the United Kingdom. It was in 1985 when Andy was selling women’s shoes and performing as a member in groups like Void ( not the American hardcore punk band ), Baume and Dinger, that he saw a newspaper advertisement advertising for a singer. He auditioned and was successful.
Vince Clarke ( Vincent John Martin ) was born in South Woodford, London, United Kingdom before moving to Basildon, the largest town in the borough of Basildon in the county of Essex, England.
He began his musical journey by studying the violin and then later the piano. After hearing the synth band OMD ( Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark ) he decided to try his hand at electronic music. Vince went on to become one of the main songwriters for Depeche Mode, Yazoo and The Assembly before forming Erasure. To date, Erasure have written over 200 songs and notched up Worldwide Album sales of over 25 Million.
” A Little Respect ” was written by Vince Clarke and Andy Bell. Production for the single was by Stephen Hague.
Stephen is an American music producer, who has worked with a variety of artists like Malcolm McLaren, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark ( OMD ), Public Image Ltd., Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Melanie C, Peter Gabriel and Dubstar.
The song was released on the 19th of September 1988 by record labels Mute in the United Kingdom and Sire ( Warner Music Group ) in the United States. It was taken as Erasure’s third single ( second in the US ) from their third Album The Innocents.
The Album was released on the 18th of April 1988 and again on the 26th of October 2009 as the 21st Anniversary Edition. The Innocents was the third studio release from Erasure not counting the 1987 remix Album, The Two Ring Circus.
The first of Many UK Number One Albums, it was awarded 2x Platinum status in the United Kingdom with over 600,000 units sold. With exposure on MTV for the Album, Erasure gained two Billboard Hot 100 Chart singles in the United States. The Innocents peaked inside the Top 50 on the Billboard 200 Chart and was certified Platinum there.
Lyrically the song is a plea for a lover to show compassion and respect. The accompanying music video was directed by The Malloys, a music video and film directing duo made up of brothers Emmett and Brendan Malloy.
They have worked with artists like Avril Lavigne, Metallica, The Black Eyed Peas, Blink-182, Kesha, Weezer, The White Stripes and Matt Costa. The video had its premier in July 2001 and featured Shawn Hatosy and Brittany Murphy.
Shawn is an America actor who has appeared in television shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Twilight Zone, ER, Law & Order, Numb3rs and Hawaii Five-0.
Brittany Murphy was an American actress and singer. She is best known for appearing in 8 Mile with Eminem. Brittany died of pneumonia at the age of 32 in December 2009.
” A Little Respect ” was a commercial success for Erasure. In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 1st of October 1988 and reached a peak of number 4. It spent 4 weeks in the top ten and a total of 13 weeks on the UK chart.
The song also charted in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Scotland and Switzerland.
