” Adore You ” was released on the 17th of December 2013 by record label RCA ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and taken as the opening track and the third single released from Miley’s fourth Album Bangerz, which reached Number One on the Billboard 200 Chart in the US.
In December 2013 Miley announced on social media that the song would be released as the third single from the Album, ” We Can’t Stop ” and ” Wrecking Ball ” were the first and second tracks released.
Lyrically the pop and R&B ballad is about Miley’s affections towards her boyfriend, she sings about ” When you say you love me, Know I love you more ” and ” And when you say you need me, Know I need you more “.
Some think Miley is singing about fiancé Liam Hemsworth, who she had a relationship with before they split up in September 2013. The Australian actor played the role of Josh Taylor in the long-running famous Australian soap opera Neighbours. He also played Jake Morrison in the 2016 film Independence Day: Resurgence.
Miley had no hand in the actual writing of the song, so it’s doubtful if the song was intended to reflect her relationship with Liam.
In an interview with Billy Johnson Jr., the Senior Editor with Yahoo Music, writer Stacy Barthe explained how the song was not intended for Miley, she’d written the song for herself. ” It was supposed to be the first track on [my EP] P.S. I Love, and when Miley heard it she was like, ‘ Um, I need that, And then I was like, ‘ Babe, it’s the first song on my EP. ’ So she doubled back with the producer, they cut it on their own, and she let me hear it. And she was like, ‘ Before you shoot me down, just hear it. ’ And she killed it, so I was like, ‘ Anybody who’s going to go through that much trouble to get the song, babe, you can have it ”.
The accompanying music video was directed by John Rankin Waddell, known professionally as Rankin, the British portrait and fashion photographer. Along with Miley, he has worked with many other artists including Marina and the Diamonds, Kelis, Kelly Rowland and Iggy Azalea.
In 2002 he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by The Royal Photographic Society, the society is one of the oldest in the World having been founded in London, England in 1853.
The video shows Miley posing suggestively on a bed and in a bathtub. The video is cut with night vision footage that is appearing to show a simulated sex tape.
