” Afternoon Delight ” is by Starland Vocal Band, the American pop band was formed by husband and wife duo Bill Danoff ( writer ) and Kathy ” Taffy ” Nivert. The other two members were Jon Carroll and Margot Chapman.
The song was produced by Milton Okun ( Milton T. “Milt” Okun ), the American arranger, record producer and singer.
He founded Cherry Lane Music Publishing Company Inc. in 1960 in an apartment above the Cherry Lane Theater, which is in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York. One critic said of Milton ” Of all producers, Milton Okun’s range is the widest, from Plácido Domingo to the Muppets. ”
” Afternoon Delight ” was taken from the group’s album of the same name, which was released by record label Windsong in 1976 and reached number twenty in the United States.
Folk singer Bill Danoff worked the night shift as a light and sound man at the Cellar Door club in Washington, DC. It was there he met John Denver ( Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. ), the award-winning American musician, singer-songwriter. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1996.
They became friends and co-wrote John Denver’s hits single ” Take Me Home, Country Roads “. During that time Bill and his wife Taffy had been doing the rounds on the folk circuit, fronting a band called Fat City.
After Fat City dwindled to just Bill and his wife Taffy, he looked to start another group. Enlisting Jon Caroll and Margot Chapman, he formed Starland Vocal Band, and the new group became the first signing of John Denver’s new record label Windsong.
The name of their breakthrough single was ” Afternoon Delight “, to which many people associate with sexual references and suggestive wordplay. However, in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Taffy Nivert shed some light on the song’s lyrics ” Bill wrote this after having lunch at Clyde’s in Washington, DC.”
Before performing the song, she explained to the audience ” It seems Clyde’s has a menu called ‘ Afternoon Delight ‘ with stuff like spiced shrimp and hot Bre with almonds. So Bill ate it – the food, that is – and went home and explained to me what ‘ Afternoon Delight ‘ should be. ”
Bill Danoff agreed in an interview with Dennis Hunt of the Los Angeles Times that many may find some sort of hidden meaning in the lyrics, he said: ” I didn’t want to write an all-out sex song “. Adding ” I just wanted to write something that was fun and hinted at sex. it was one of those songs that you could really have a good time writing. ”
Bill and his wife Taffy thought they might have a problem getting airplay. However, very few radio stations found the lyrics objectionable.
The song was a commercial success. In the United States it entered the Billboard Hot 100 on the 8th of May 1976 at number eighty-seven and after nine weeks on the chart reached Number One, which it held for two weeks. The song spent a total of twenty weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, it entered the UK Singles Chart on the 7th of August 1976 and reached a peak of number eighteen; the song spent one week in the Top twenty and a total of ten weeks on the UK chart.
