Although Lionel’s career began in the 1960s, it wasn’t until 1968 that he found success after he became a singer and saxophonist with the Commodores. The band won a Grammy in 1986 for ” Nightshift “and in 2003 were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
Lionel’s solo career began in 1982 and in 1985 he co-wrote ( with Michael Jackson ) ” We Are the World “, the 20 Million selling charity single. He has won the Grammy Awards five times and received the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s highest honor, the Johnny Mercer Award. Lionel is one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time with sales in excess of 100 million records Worldwide.
” All Night Long ( All Night ) ” was written by Lionel Richie with production for the single by Lionel Richie and James Anthony Carmichael. James is an American Grammy-winning musician, arranger, and record producer. He began freelancing in the late 1960s working with artists signed to the Motown label. James has worked with the Miracles, the Jackson 5, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight and Eddie Kendricks.
The song was released on the 31st of August 1983 by record label Motown ( Universal Music Group ) and taken from Lionel’s second solo Album Can’t Slow Down. The Album, released by Motown Records on the 11th of October 1983, topped the Billboard 200 Chart and spent 59 consecutive weeks inside the Top 10.
Can’t Slow Down spent a total of 160 weeks ( spread over three years ) on the chart. By 1986 sales of the Album was in the region of 15 Million copies, eventually Can’t Slow Down would go on and sell in excess of 20 Million.
Lionel struggled with writing the hook for the song, in an interview with CNN he said ” I just couldn’t find the ending – I couldn’t find all night long to save my life. I had everything, the verses, the middle part, all the stuff. I just did not have all night long. It took me forever to find it. And finally one night, the heavens opened up and came through. ”
Lyrically the song is written in English, the African lyrics used in the song like ” Tom bo li de say de moi ya ” and ” Jambo jumbo ” are completely made up gibberish by Lionel. He has said these portions of the song are a ” wonderful joke .” Lionel wrote them when he realised he didn’t have the time to hire a translator for the foreign language lyrics he wanted included in the song.
The accompanying music video was directed by Bob Rafelson. Bob is an American film director, writer and producer. As a film director he is best-known for Five Easy Pieces, The King of Marvin Gardens and The Postman Always Rings Twice. Bob was also one of the co-creators of the pop group and TV series The Monkees.
” All Night Long ( All Night ) ” was a commercial success for Lionel. In the United States the song reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, staying at the top for 4 weeks. It spent a total of 24 weeks on the chart. The song was also Number One on the Adult Contemporary and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 1st of October 1983 and reached a peak of number 2 ( kept from the top by Billy Joel ). It spent 6 weeks in the top ten and a total of 16 weeks on the UK chart.
