” Alright ” by British group Supergrass was released as a double A-side single along with ” Time ” and taken from their album, I Should Coco which was released in 1995.
” Alright ” became a favourite with radio stations in the United Kingdom and received considerable airplay helping to turn it into a teen anthem at the time.
Coupled with upbeat lyrics and the cheerful piano, it became one of those songs that stuck in your head and helped to define the British youth culture when the Britpop was the mainstay of the charts.
The fact that Supergrass was made up of youth ( Lead singer Gaz Coombes was 19 ) helped the overall likeability of the song.
The lead singer Gaz Coombs said that the song ” it wasn’t written as an anthem. It isn’t supposed to be a rallying cry for our generation. The stuff about ‘We are young/We run green…’ isn’t about being 19 but really 13 or 14 and just discovering girls and drinking. It’s meant to be light-hearted and a bit of a laugh, not at all a rebellious call to arms.”
Although the song has a very summery feel, it was written in a cottage where the heating had broken down.
” Alright ” was number five from the singles released off the album and was liked by music critics and fans. The band’s popularity with ” Alright ” means it’s still receiving airplay some 20 years after it was first released.
Although the song received radio play it failed to reach the top spot in the United Kingdom; there it peaked at number two, however it was the most successful of the band’s songs.
The video had as much popularity as the song, featuring the band members messing around with bicycles and a double bed on wheels at Portmeirion in North Wales.
Seeing the video, One of the World’s most successful directors approached the group to make a TV show similar to the Monkees. However, the group turned him down to concentrate on other music projects.
