Angelo Brotherhood of Man
Song Title: Angelo
Artist: Brotherhood of Man
Date of release: 21st of June 1977
Description: ” Angelo ” is by Brotherhood of Man, the British pop group and 1976 Eurovision Song Contest winners. Originally the group was set up in 1969 by Tony Hiller, a record producer and songwriter.
In the early days the line up changed frequently and in 1973 a four piece was set up permanently. The lineup from 1973 onwards has remained the same with Martin Lee, Nicky Stevens, Lee Sheriden and Sandra Stevens.
The song was written by Tony Hiller, Martin Lee and Lee Sheriden with production for the single by Tony Hiller. Tony is an English songwriter and producer who has had over 500 artists record his work including Elton John, Olivia Newton-John, Andy Williams, Sonny and Cher, The Osmonds, Glen Campbell, The Hollies and of course Brotherhood of Man.
” Angelo ” was released on the 21st of June 1977 by record label Pye and taken as the lead single from the group’s fourth Album ” Images “. The Album failed to chart in the UK.
After being returned back to the UK charts with ” Oh Boy (The Mood I’m In) ” which reached number 8 in the UK, the four piece needed another hit. The lyrics of ” Angelo ” tell a story about a poor shepherd boy in Mexico who falls in love with a girl from a wealthy family. Their path to true love and happiness is blocked by her family, the shepherd boy and rich girl know they can never really be together so they run away to commit suicide.
The concept of the song was based on the greatest love story of them all, namely Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. The English playwright is regarded by scholars and public alike to be the greatest writer in the English language.
The song is sung entirely by the female members of the group, Sandra Stevens and Nicky Stevens. Sandra opens the song as a solo.
Brotherhood of Man attracted criticism for the song being similar to ABBA’s 1976 hit ” Fernando “, which is one of the best-selling singles of all time. Co-writer and group member Lee Sheriden has denied the group copied any part of ” Fernando ” and stated they ” were simply writing in the style of the day “. Another of the co-writers and member, Martin Lee, has also gone on record denying the allegation, however he does admit that ” they were pretty close “.
The song was a commercial success for the group. In the United Kingdom ” Angelo ” entered the UK chart on the 9th of July 1977 and reached Number One on the 20th of August, it spent 1 week at the top. The song spent 10 weeks in the top ten and a total of 12 weeks on the UK chart.
The song also charted in Ireland, Japan, South Africa, Germany, Belgium, France, The Netherlands and New Zealand, making Number One in several.
Brotherhood of Man performed ” Angelo ” in front of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth at the Silver Jubilee Royal Variety Gala in November 1977.
