Angels Robbie Williams
Song Title: Angels
Artist: Robbie Williams
Date of release: 1st of December 1997
Description: ” Angels ” is by Robbie Williams, the English singer, songwriter and actor. Robbie joined Take That in 1990 at the age of sixteen, becoming the youngest member of the group. His mother saw an advertisement which was looking for members of a boy band, she suggested to Robbie that he should apply. He left the band in 1995, leaving the four remaining members to complete their world tour and release a final single, in 1996 the group disbanded.
Robbie has had success as a solo artist, he has had seven Number one singles with all but one of his 11 studio Albums reaching the top of the Albums Chart in the United Kingdom. In the United Kingdom, he is the best-selling British solo artist and in Latin America he is the best selling non-Latino artist.
” Angels ” was co-written by Guy Chambers and Robbie Williams. Guy is an award winning English songwriter, musician and record producer. The songwriter penned his first song at the age of eight. Although best known for his work with Robbie, he has written for many artists including Rufus Wainwright, Mark Ronson, Kylie Minogue, Example, The Wanted, James Blunt, Katie Melua and Tina Turner.
The song was released on the 1st of December 1997 by record label Chrysalis ( Universal Music Group ) and taken as the fourth single from Robbie’s debut Album Life thru a Lens. The Album, released on the 29th of September 1997, was influenced by Britpop and had the working name of The Show-Off Must Go On. After 27 weeks on the UK Albums Chart the Album reached Number One, holding the top position for 2 weeks. Life thru a Lens has become the 58th best selling Album of all time in the UK with sales of 2.4 million copies.
A fan favourite, the song is often used by Robbie to conclude his concerts and is considered to be the song that saved his floundering solo career. Although the song was co-written with Guy Chambers, Robbie is irritated that many people assume it was written by Guy. Robbie made this point clear in an interview saying ” It pees me off because everyone thinks Guy penned ‘Let Me Entertain You’ and ‘Angels’, but they’re my songs. ”
In November 2016 Robbie said about the song while appearing as a guest on RTL Late Night, the Dutch late night talkshow hosted by Humberto Tan. ” Angels is a song that myself and Guy Chambers wrote and it was the first of our songs that we wrote together. We could tell and hoped and prayed that we got something incredibly special. After we wrote the song, Guy got very ill, straight away. I kind of walked back from his house to my flat in the cold and in the snow with this tape in my hand and about a mile and a half in, I hailed a cab down. He played it and said ‘ that is great, that is, Robbie, that is gonne be number 1 ‘, and you know what: it never was number one. ”
The accompanying music video was directed by Vaughan Arnell, British music videos and television commercials director. Vaughan has directed and co-directed videos for Terence Trent D’Arby, Jamiroquai, Take That, George Michael, Paloma Faith and One Direction. The video was filmed mostly using arial shots on location at Saunton Sands, a beach in Saunton, an English village on the North Devon coast in the United Kingdom.
” Angels ” was a commercial success for Robbie. In the United States the song reached a peak of number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, spending 19 weeks on the chart. It also reached number 10 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks Chart and number 21 on the Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks Chart.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 13th of December 1997 and reached a peak of number 4. It spent 12 weeks in the top ten and a total of 68 weeks on the UK chart.
