The Album was released in 1980 and was to be Kate’s first Number One album, it made history by becoming the first Album by a British solo female artist to reach Number One on the UK Album chart and the first Album by a solo female artist to enter the UK Album chart at Number One.
Lyrically the song is about loyalty. A woman tests her husbands loyalty by taking the name ” Babooshka ” and sending her husband notes which she has him believe are from a much younger woman, which she feels is the opposite of how her husband looks at her. She becomes more bitter and consumed by paranoia, which ruins the relationship between her and her husband.
In an interview about writing the lyrics for the song ” I’m sure I heard about it on some TV series years ago, when I was a kid. You know, these period things that the BBC do. I think it’s an extraordinary thing for someone to do… That’s why I found it fascinating “.
When coming up with the name for the song, Kate hadn’t realized that ” Babooshka ” sounds like the Russian word Babushka, which means Grandmother. As many English countries mispronounce words, it also means Russian woman’s headwear and even as a nickname used for an anniminous woman who might have photographed the events surrounding the shooting of JFK on November the 22nd 1963, in Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas.
The accompanying music video was directed by Keith MacMillan, he directed the video for Kate’s single ” Wuthering Heights ” and has worked with many different artists including Motorhead, Blondie, Pat Benatar, Bananarama, Judas Priest, Simple Minds and XTC.
In the video Kate is seen beside a double bass which is used to symbolise her husband. She wears a black bodysuit and veil for the embittered wife. She makes the change to the costume worn by her alter-ego ” Babooshka “.
The costume of ” Babooshka ” was based on an illustration by painter and illustrator Chris Achilleos. Chris created the 1979 Album cover for Lovehunter by Whitesnake with the artwork of a naked woman straddling a giant serpent. The controversial Album cover was to be the last time Chris Achilleos would work with bands.
The song was a commercial success for Kate. In Australia the song reached number 2 and went on to be the 20th best-selling single of the year there.
In the United Kingdom ” Babooshka ” entered the UK chart on the 5th of July 1980 and peaked at number 5. It spent 4 weeks in the top ten and a total of 10 weeks on the UK chart.
