” Bad ” was released on the 7th of September 1987 by record label Epic Records and taken as the second single from Michael’s seventh Album of the same name.
The song was based on a real-life story Michael had read about in either Time or Newsweek magazine.
In Michael’s autobiography Moonwalk published in 1988, Michael explained the concept of the song ” ‘Bad’ is a song about the street. It’s about this kid from a bad neighbourhood who gets to go away to a private school. He comes back to the old neighbourhood when he’s on a break from school, and the kids from the neighbourhood start giving him trouble. He sings, ‘I’m bad, you’re bad, who’s bad, who’s the best?’ He’s saying when you’re strong and good, then you’re bad “.
He originally intended it to be a duet with Prince. Prince wasn’t so keen on the idea.
In an interview with VH1’s Chris Rock in 1997, Prince explained why he turned the offer down ” That Wesley Snipes character, that would have been me,” he said ” To put it better, the first line of that song is ‘your butt is mine.’ Now I said, who’s gonna sing that to who? Cause you sure ain’t singing it to me. And I sure ain’t singing it to you “.
The accompanying music video is some 18 minutes in length and was filmed on location in New York city with the dance sequence shot in a Hoyt-Schermerhorn subway station in Brooklyn. It was written by Richard Price. Richard is a much-acclaimed novelist and screenwriter; his novels include The Wanderers published in 1974, his 1992 book Clockers and his 2008 Lush Life. He also writes for tv shows The Wire and The Night Of.
The short film for ” Bad ” was directed by Martin Scorsese. Martin has a long career as a director; he worked on the 1990 film Goodfellas which starred Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta and the epic The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) which starred Willem Dafoe and the late David Bowie.
The video made many references to the 1961 film West Side Story, the audio track used in the video was different to the one used for the Album. In the video, there is an instrumental organ solo which was not used for the Album recording of the song.
Choreographers Jeffrey Daniel and Gregg Burge designed the dance moves based on West Side Story. The dance moves received a nomination for choreography at the MTV Video Music Awards Ceremony in 1988.
