Description: ” Be My Baby ” is by The Ronettes, who were an American girl group from the 1960s. The Ronettes were made up of consisted of lead vocalist Veronica Bennett, Estelle Bennett, her older sister and Nedra Talley, their cousin.
The three girls began their career in show business as a dance act called the Dolly Sisters. In 1961 they became resident dancers at the famous peppermint lounge, a discotheque at 128 West 45th Street in New York, where it is said the dance craze The Twist originated. The building that housed the club was demolished in the 1980s.
The trio took lessons in harmony singing and not long after signed to a record label. Their first single, ” I Want A Boy “, released in August 1961, was credited to Ronnie And The Relatives. After their second single, ” Silhouettes “, they had changed their name to The Ronettes.
In 1963, the three auditioned for legendary producer Phil Spector who signed them to his label Philles Records. Their first song for the label wasn’t released as a single, another three songs recorded by the trio were credited to The Crystals, not The Ronettes.
Despite the early setbacks, the group had nine songs reach the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in the United States, five of which peaked inside the Top 40. The Ronettes were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004 and three years later into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Group member, Estelle, died at the age of 67 as a result of colon cancer.

Born in Brooklyn, New York City, on the 3rd of April 1938, he, along with his then-wife Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector, wrote some of the biggest hit records of the 1960s. These included ” Do Wah Diddy Diddy “, ” Then He Kissed Me “, ” Chapel of Love ” and ” River Deep – Mountain High “.
Jeff has written and co-written hit singles for many artists including The Crystals, The Ronettes, The Shangri-Las, The Monkees and The Archies. In December 2009, Jeff Barry inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Ellie Greenwich was an American pop music singer, songwriter and record producer. Born on the 23rd of October 1940 in Brooklyn, New York City, Ellie wrote and co-wrote many songs that are today still popular.
She teamed up with Jeff Barry and Phil Spector to write ” I Can Hear Music ” for The Ronettes. The Beach Boys covered the song with their version reaching number twenty-four on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1969. Ellie Greenwich died of a heart attack on the 26th of August 2009.
Phil Spector is an American record producer, musician and songwriter. Born on the 26th of December 1939 in the Bronx, New York City, the legendary producer developed the Wall of Sound at Gold Star Studios in the 60s.
With the help of engineer Larry Levine and the session musicians known as The Wrecking Crew, they developed a music production technique known as The Wall of Sound. The complex type of music production formula was devised so their music output would sound good on AM radios and jukeboxes, a favourite way to listen to music at the time.
His career began in 1958 when he co-founded the Teddy Bears, performing on guitar and vocals. Phil wrote the group’s Billboard Number One ” To Know Him Is to Love Him “.
Phil has worked with a variety of recording artists including The Paris Sisters, The Crystals, Connie Francis, Darlene Love, The Righteous Brothers, Leonard Cohen, John Lennon and George Harrison.
He is widely acknowledged as being one of the most influential figures in the history of pop music. In 1989, Phil was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a nonperformer. Additionally, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1997. On the 29th of May 2009, Phil Spector was sentenced to 19 years to life for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson in 2003.
” Be My Baby ” was released in August 1963 by record label Philles Records ( now administered by Sony/ATV Music Publishing ) and was featured on The Ronettes debut Album Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica.
The Album, released in November 1964, was made up of singles produced by Phil Spector. One track, ” So Young ” had been previously released as a single with credit to Veronica, although vocals of Estelle Bennett and Nedra Talley, the other Ronettes feature on the record. Cher sings backing vocals on several tracks on the Album.
The song was recorded in July 1963 at the Gold Star Studios, which was a major independent recording studio in Los Angeles, California. Opened in October 1950, the studio was one of the most influential and commercial studios in the world until 1984 when it closed. The studio was later demolished and replaced by a mini-mall.
” Be My Baby ” was a commercial success for The Ronettes. In the United States, the song reached a peak of number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1963, spending thirteen weeks on the chart there. It also reached number four on the R&B Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 23rd of October 1963 and reached a peak of number four. It spent four weeks in the top ten and a total of thirteen weeks on the UK chart.
