” Beautiful Sunday ” is by Daniel Boone, the English singer-songwriter. He was born Peter Charles Green on the 31st of July 1942 in Birmingham, England, later changing his name to Peter Lee Stirling.
His career began when he became a singer and guitarist with the Beachcombers a band that performed gigs around Birmingham in the north of England from the late 1950s to the early 60s.
In 1971, he joined the record label, Penny Farthing, which was an independent label owned by British record producer Larry Page. The label signed many artists including Shocking Blue, who had a massive hit single with ” Venus ” in 1969.
Peter Lee Stirling became a singer and songwriter for the label, at this point he changed his name to Daniel Boone, who was an American frontiersman and now considered a folk-hero in the United States.
Daniel Boone’s first release for the Penny Farthing label was ” Daddy Don’t You Walk So Fast “, a ballad written by Geoff Stephens and Peter Callander. In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 14th of August 1971 and peaked at number seventeen, giving Daniel his first and only UK Top Twenty hit single.
Daniel then worked with another songwriter working for the label, Rod McQueen. They produced ” Mamma ” as a follow-up, which failed to chart.
The next single was ” Beautiful Sunday “, released in March 1972. The song was written by Daniel Boone and Rod McQueen with production by Larry Page.
The song was taken from Daniel Boone’s album of the same name. The single became a commercial success, selling over 2 million copies worldwide. In the United States, it reached number fifteen on the Billboard Hot 100 on the 16th of September 1972 and spent twenty weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, ” Beautiful Sunday ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 1st of April 1972 and peaked at number twenty-one. It spent nine weeks in the Top Forty and ten weeks in the Top 100.
The single topped the charts in Norway and Germany, where it stayed at the top from May to late June 1972. In Belgium, it peaked at number four. It also charted in Canada, Argentina, Switzerland, France, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, where it was certified Gold. In Japan, ” Beautiful Sunday ” is still the biggest selling single on the Japanese Oricon chart by an international artist.
