Warner Bros. Records released ” Believe ” in October 1998 as the lead single from the Album with a more pop music approach instead of the usual Cher rock that fans had become used to over the years. The new direction was primarily designed to be for the club culture and to reach out to a new generation of fans.
” Believe ” divided critics, some praised the song, and Billboard noted it was one of her best in years. However, the editor of AllMusic Michael Gallucci wasn’t quite so enthusiastic.
The critics may have been dismissive of ” Believe ” however the record buying public the World over showed that they approved of Cher’s new direction.
The song was released in 1998 and became a massive hit with number one slots in 23 countries. Early January 1999 Cher took the song into the Billboard Hot 100 at number 40, later climbing to number one in March of that year, this made Cher the oldest female artist to do so.
Billboard ranked ” Believe ” as the number one song of 1999 with both the Top 100 and Hot Dance Play charts, the song was to become the most significant hit single release in the entire career for Cher.
A 7 week stretch at number 1 in the United Kingdom gave Cher the country’s biggest selling single of 1998. ” Believe ” is still the all-time best-selling single by a female artist in the country.
Figures released by the Official Charts Company show the song has sold in the region of 1,790,000 copies as of 2014 in the UK.
Success wasn’t confined to the US and UK, in October 2008 on the VH1 Top 10 Number One Pop Songs countdown, Cher’s ” Believe ” grabbed a number 10 slot.
At the 42nd Grammy Awards, Cher was nominated for two awards, Record of the Year and Best Dance Recording. Cher went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.
