” Better Off Alone ” is by Alice Deejay, the Dutch dance music group. The song was written by Sebastian Molijn and Eelke Kalberg.
Production for the track was by DJ Jurgen ( Jürgen Rijkers ), today he is a radio presenter on the station Fresh FM.
The song was released by record label ISBA Music Entertainment Inc in 1998 and taken as the first single from the group’s debut Album, Who Needs Guitars Anyway?.
In 1999 ” Better Off Alone ” was re-released but this time by record labels Positiva, Universal and Republic.
Lead singer Judith Pronk became the lead singer after joining with DJ Tempo and producers Wessel van Diepen and Dennis van den Driesschen ( Danski & Delmondo ), who put together the Euro-pop group Vengaboys.
Initially ” Better Off Alone ” was to be instrumental, when listening to the track DJ Sebastiaan Molijn started humming the vocal melody and came up with the title of the song just after the love of his life had left him.
He didn’t tell her the song was about her and never saw her again. He later commented ” I never saw her again. It made the emotion of the song as real as it gets. One simple line that said it all “.
Alice Deejay scored a huge international success with this song, in the United States ” Better Off Alone ” reached number twenty-seven on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and spent a total of twenty weeks on there.
” Better Off Alone ” also reached number three and spent twelve weeks on the Billboard Dance Club Songs Chart, Alice Deejay also did well on the Billboard Pop Songs Chart with a number twenty position and a stay of twenty weeks on the chart.
Outside of the United States the group had success with a number two on the Nielsen SoundScan Chart in Canada and took the song into the Top Ten in France, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and The Netherlands.
In the United Kingdom, ” Better Off Alone ” entered the UK Singles Chart and climbed to reach number two, the song spent seven weeks in the Top Ten and a total of twenty weeks on the chart.
