” Black Or White ” was released on the 11th of November 1991 by record label Epic Records and taken as the first single from Michael’s eighth Album ” Dangerous “.
The song focuses on the subject of racism and equality. Lyrically the song is saying that whatever colour a person is they are still human and should not be judged by the colour of their skin.
After the song was released, some people made assumptions about the guitar riff used in the song. It was widely touted that Slash from Guns ‘ n Roses was responsible, however, in an interview with CNN Slash said ” I never played on (Black Or White’). If you listen to (the hook), that’s gay. I’d never play that. I played on ‘Give in to Me’ (also on Dangerous ) and in the ‘Black and White’ video when Macaulay Culkin was trashing around, that’s me playing “.
Another question that arose when the song came out was the identity of the rapper. In the video the rap sequence is rapped by the then 11-year-old Macaulay Culkin, in fact, the rapping was done by co-writer Bill Bottrell with Macaulay Culkin lip-syncing.
The video that accompanied ” Black Or White ” was directed by John Landis, John had previously directed ” Thriller ” for Michael. The video stars George Wendt and Tess Harper as the parents.
The music video was first shown on MTV, BET, VH1, and Fox on November the 24th 1991; it was to be Fox’s highest Nielsen ratings ever. The video had a premier in 27 countries simultaneously, giving it a Worldwide audience of some 500 Million, the highest number for a music video ever.
Special effects in the video were created by Pacific Data Images, the technique used to merge faces into one another is known a morphing. The special effect technique had been used in the films Willow and Terminator 2.
The end of the song shows different races and nationalities morphing into one another, known as ” talking heads “, these included actor Glen Chin, model Tyra Banks, actress Khrystyne Haje and actor Jeffrey Anderson-Gunter.
” Black Or White ” was a commercial success for Michael. It entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at number thirty-five, after three weeks the song had climbed to number three and then on to Number One. The song spent seven weeks at Number One and a total of twenty weeks on the chart. It was to be the fastest chart-topping single since the Beatles ” Get back “.
