” Blame ” is by Calvin Harris ( Adam Richard Wiles ), the Scottish DJ and producer. The song was written by Calvin Harris, John Newman and James Newman, with production by Calvin Harris.
The song was released by record labels Deconstruction, Fly Eye and Columbia and taken as the third single from Calvin’s fourth Album, Motion.
” Blame ” has the vocals from English singer John Newman, better known for his 2013 UK number one single ” Love Me Again “.
Calvin was approached on Twitter by John about working on a song together; he sent a demo to Calvin with his vocals and basic chords for the track.
Taking the demo, Calvin built the music around the vocals, all the lyrics for the song were written by John.
Lyrically the song talks about a man who is feeling guilty after cheating on his partner and will not take responsibility for the cheating.
Earlier, before ” Blame ” was released Calvin announced via Twitter that his relationship with Rita Ora was over, leading to some people to interpret the song as about Calvin and Rita Ora’s relationship breakdown. In fact, the song has nothing to do with Calvin or Rita Ora, the lyrics were written entirely by John Newman.
The song went on to receive excellent reviews from music critics, Idolator’s Robbie Daw commented that the song ” somehow feels fuller and more rounded-out, structurally, than much of his other output. Call it a new era for the Scottish producer/DJ “.
The song was liked by MTV Australia who described the track as ” Hot ” and also commented that the song is ” sure to have the crowd singing loud and proud “.
Calvin and John had substantial commercial success with ” Blame “, in the United States the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at number thirty-one, from there it climbed to reach number nineteen and spent a total of seven weeks on the chart.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the single Platinum sales of one million in the US alone.
Outside of the United States, the song reached Number One in many European countries including Finland, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden.
In the United Kingdom ” Blame ” went straight in at the top for one week, the song spent eight weeks in the Top Ten and a total of thirty-four weeks on the UK chart.
The song was awarded Platinum status by the British Phonographic Industry ( BPI ) for sales of 600,000 and was to become Calvin’s seventh UK Number One.
