” BonBon ” is by Era Istrefi, the Albanian singer and songwriter. Era was born on the 4th of July 1994 in Pristina, the capital city of Kosovo. In the 90s the city was part of FR Yugoslavia, also known as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which in 2008 declared independence from Serbia.
Her debut was in 2013 in her native country with the release of ” Mani për money “. To date, Era has released nine singles, her latest, in 2017, was ” No I Love Yous ” which features French Montana, the Moroccan-American hip-hop artist.
” BonBon ” was written by Era Istrefi and Ergen Berisha. Jenson Vaughan wrote the English version. Jenson is a Canadian singer, songwriter and composer. He has worked with a variety of artists including Madonna, Britney Spears, Snoop Dogg, Jason Derulo and Bodybangers, the German DJ’s consisting of producers Andreas Hinz and Michael Müller.
Production for the single was by Cricket, a producer based in Pristina. He’s been producing music since 2012. Specialising in EDM, Hip Hop, House, Pop and Reggae, he has worked with many artists like Majk, Fjolla Morina and Argjentina Ramosaj.
The song, mainly sung in Albanian with additional English lyrics, was released by record label Neser (the independent label founded by Faton Shoshi ) on the 30th of December 2015 with the English version on the 27th of June 2016.
” BonBon “, in English ” It’s okay, it’s okay “, was nominated for Song of the Year at The Annual Kult Academy Awards, which is dedicated to recognising the achievements of Albanian artists. In the same year, it won an award for Song of the Year at Albania’s Top Music Awards.
Lyrically the EDM track is about fear of being alone. Some have made comparisons between Era’s style and the likes of Sia and Rihanna. Era has said in interviews that they are her influences along with Lana Del Rey, the American singer-songwriter.
The accompanying music video features Era performing the song wearing a pink fake fur hooded coat on a snow-covered road in Brezovica, one of the most visited winter tourist destinations in Kosovo.
The video for the song was uploaded to the official Neser YouTube channel, later removed and added to Ultra Music’s official YouTube channel after Era signed to record labels Sony Music Entertainment and Ultra Music.
To date, the video has been viewed over 490 million times and is currently the second most watched video on Ultra Music’s channel.
” BonBon ” was a commercial success for Era. In the United States, the song reached a peak of number thirteen on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs Chart.
In the United Kingdom, it failed to make an impact, peaking at number 197 on the UK Singles Chart.
The single peaked inside the Top Twenty in Austria, Germany, Greece, Israel, Lebanon, Romania and Sweden.
