” Born to Be Alive ” is by Patrick Hernandez, the French singer-songwriter. Patrick was born on the 6th of April 1949 in Le Blanc-Mesnil, a French commune located in the department of Seine-Saint-Denis in the region Ile-de-France.
After becoming interested in music during the 60s, Patrick started his career touring southern France with several groups during the earlier part of the 1970s. During his time performing in the dancehalls and ballrooms, he met Hervé Tholance, the French arranger, guitarist and vocalist.
Patrick and Hervé formed a duo and gained success locally backing musicians like Francis Cabrel, Laurent Voulzy and the French group Gold, one of the only French groups to had songs reach the Top Ten of France’s SNEP Chart five times between the years 1985 and 1987.
In 1978, Patrick met the producer Jean Vanloo, best known for co-writing, along with Phillipe van de Maele, Chocolat’s 1975 hit single, Brasilia Carnival. With disco music at its peak, Patrick signed a recording contract and went to Waterloo in Belgium to begin working on songs.
In the 80s and 90s, Patrick toured and occasionally featured on albums by other artists in Europe. His follow up single ” Back to Boogie “, which he sang together with Hervé Tholance, was only a moderate success. Today, Patrick lives in L’Isle-Sur-La-Sorgue, a former anglers town which sits along the River Sorgue in Southern France.
” Born to Be Alive ” was written by Patrick Hernandez with production for the single by Jean Vanloo, the French producer. He has worked with Patrick Sébastien, French impressionist, humorist, actor, film director and singer. Jean has also worked with WestBam ( Maximilian Lenz ), the German DJ and mixer.
The song was released in 1978 by record label Aquarius Records ( Paris ) and was taken from his debut album of the same name.
The album, released in the summer of 1979, reached number sixty-one on the Billboard 200 in the United States, spending fifteen weeks on the chart there. Born to Be Alive also reached number twenty in Germany and number nine in Norway.
” Born to Be Alive ” was a commercial success for Patrick. In the United States, the song reached a peak of number sixteen on the Billboard Hot 100, spending nineteen weeks on the chart there.
It reached number one on the Billboard National Disco Action Chart, seventeen on the Cash Box Chart and nineteen on the US Record World Chart, which was a music industry trade magazine in the United States, it ceased publication on the 10th of April 1982.
The Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) certified the single Gold with sales of one million copies.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 16th of June 1979 and reached a peak of number ten. It spent one week in the Top Ten and a total of fourteen weeks on the UK chart.
” Born to Be Alive ” was a huge worldwide hit topping the charts in thirteen countries. By the end of the year, Patrick Hernandez had amassed fifty-two Gold and Platinum awards from more than fifty different countries where the song had been released.
