” Brave ” is by Sara Bareilles ( Sara Beth Bareilles ), American singer-songwriter. The song was written by Sara Bareilles and Jack Antonoff.
The song was produced by Mark Endert. The Grammy Award nominee has worked with many diverse artists including Madonna, Gavin Degraw, Maroon 5, The Fray, Rihanna and Ricky Martin.
” Brave ” was released on the 23rd of April by record label Epic and taken as the lead single from Sara’s fourth album, The Blessed Unrest.
Sara and Jack Antonoff ( From the band Fun ) wrote the song after getting inspiration from the struggle that a close friend of Sara had when coming out. Sara explained the purpose of the song in many interviews saying ” There’s so much honor and integrity and beauty in being able to be who you are, and it’s important to be brave because by doing that you also give others permission to do the same. ”
Jack Antonoff described the song ” as a real civil rights anthem at a time when there are no civil rights anthems, and there’s a giant need for civil rights anthems. ”
The accompanying video was directed by actress Rashida Jones. Rashida is probably better known for her roles in Parks and Recreation, Boston Public and The Office.
In the video, filmed on location in Los Angeles, Sara sings while clips of people dancing in different public places are mixed in, there is a shopping mall, a gym, a library and a bus stop.
Music critics gave ” Brave ” mostly positive reviews. A reviewer for Entertainment Weekly wrote that Bareilles channels singers like Fiona Apple and Florence Welch.
Julianne Hilmes wrote of the song for the British music magazine Vox that the song was ” a classic Sara Bareilles style to it. The moral of this song: speak up! ”
Along with positive music reviews, commercially the song was a success. In the United States, ” Brave “, entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number sixty-one and climbed to reach a peak of number twenty-three. The song stayed on the chart for a total of seventeen weeks.
Sara had success in both Australia and New Zealand. The song peaked at number three after entering the Australian singles chart at number forty. In New Zealand, it entered the chart at number fifteen and climbed to reach a peak of number four.
In the United Kingdom, the single peaked at number forty-eight on the UK Singles Chart and spent a total of six weeks on the UK chart there.
