Break your heart Taio Cruz
Song Title: Break your heart
Artist: Taio Cruz
Date of release: 13th of September 2009 (UK), 2nd of February 2010 (US)
Description: ” Break your heart ” is by Taio Cruz ( Jacob Taio Cruz ), the British singer, songwriter, record producer and rapper. The song was written by Taio Cruz, Fraser T Smith and Chris Bridges.
Production for the single was by Taio Cruz and Fraser T Smith. Englishman Fraser is a Grammy Award winning producer and songwriter. He has produced and mixed six Number One singles and worked on fifteen Number One Albums in both the UK and US. He has worked with artists like Adele, Britney Spears, Ellie Goulding, Stormzy, Katy B, Tinchy Stryder and Plan B.
The song was released on the 13th of September 2009 in the UK by record label Island and in the US on the 2nd of February 2010 by Mercury. It was taken as the lead single from Taio’s second Album ” Rokstarr “.
Taio wrote two songs for Cheryl Cole for inclusion on her debut Album ” 3 Words “. After offering the songs, Taio heard nothing from Cheryl’s record label. He set about reworking ” Break your heart ” for a male artist and included it on his Album ” Rokstarr “.
In an interview with HitQuarters co-writer Fraser T Smith explained the reason why the song didn’t make the cut. Ferdy Unger-Hamilton, the boss of the Polydor label, felt the song was too close in style to ” Heartbreaker ” by will.i.am, who at the time was the executive producer of Cheryl Cole’s Album ” 3 Words “.
Despite the rejection, Taio called the song ” Catchy and had a good melody “, he also said that ” both girls and guys can get into this character “.
In an interview with Pete Lewis of Blues & Soul, Taio explained what the song is about ” It’s about breaking a girl’s heart, but in a way that’s kinda not on purpose. It’s more that I’m just a single guy, trying to be single and trying to remain single. And sometimes, when you are in that place, you get girls who wanna be a part of what you’re about – but, because you’re not really ready for a relationship, those girls can end up being heartbroken. So what I’m basically saying is ‘I might just break your heart. But I’m only gonna break your heart if you come through this way right now'”.
There are two versions of the video for the single. The original video was shot in July 2009 in Sotogrande, Spain. Sotogrande is a development in Andalusia which is mostly privately owned. Some of Spain’s richest families have summer homes in the area. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair also has a residence there.
In February 2010 some new parts to the video were filmed in Miami, United States so Ludacris could be included. The result is two versions of the single’s video.
Featured alongside Taio is Nadya Nepomnyashaya, the Uzbekistan-born supermodel. She is best known as a lingerie model and has appeared in the FHM magazine 2012 Thailand issue.
It has been said that the video was influenced by P.Diddy ( Sean Combs ), Taio replied ” Probably on some kind of subconscious level. I just love supermodels, I love sunshine, and I love sports cars. And this time we also added a speedboat. So you got the four S’s in there “.
” Break your heart ” was a commercial success for Taio. In the United States the song reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and spent 25 weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the chart at Number One on the 26th of September 2009 and spent 3 weeks at the top. The song spent 6 weeks in the top ten and a total of 23 weeks on the UK chart.
