” Breathe Again ” is by Toni Braxton, the Grammy award-winning American singer, songwriter, pianist, record producer, actress and television personality. Toni was born in Severn, a small town in the northwestern Anne Arundel County in the state of Maryland, US.
The eldest of six siblings, Toni first experienced performing when she joined the local church choir. She joined the rest of the family to form, The Braxtons, who signed with Arista Records in 1989.
Toni went solo two years later and signed with LaFace Records, becoming the label’s first female solo artist. The label released her self-titled debut album, Toni Braxton, on the 13th of July 1993.
To date, Toni has worldwide sales of over 67 million records, which includes 41 million albums. Her music has earned Toni numerous accolades including seven Grammy Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards and seven American Music Awards. The R&B icon is one of the best-selling artists of the 90s.
” Breathe Again ” was written by Babyface ( Kenneth Brian Edmonds ), the American singer, songwriter and record producer.
During his career, he has written and produced over twenty-six chart-topping R&B hits and has collected eleven Grammy Awards. He founded, along with Antonio ‘ L.A. ‘ Reid, LaFace Records in 1989.
Babyface has worked with many artists as either writer or producer, including Carole King, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Faith Evans, Beyoncé, Diana Ross and Michael Jackson.
The song was produced by L.A. Reid and Babyface. L.A. Reid ( Antonio Marquis “L.A.” Reid ) is an American music executive, musician, songwriter and record producer. He is also an author and former judge on the talent show, The X Factor and has worked with many famous artists like Boyz II Men, Avril Lavigne, Whitney Houston, Justin Bieber and Michael Jackson.
He curated and operated as executive producer for Michael Jackson’s second posthumous album, Xscape, which was released on the 13th of May 2014 in the United States and peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 Chart.
” Breathe Again ” was released on the 6th of August 1993 by record label LaFace ( Sony Music Entertainment ) and taken as the second single from Toni’s debut album, Toni Braxton.
The album, released on the 13th of July 1993, debuted at number thirty-six on the Billboard 200. It later spent two non-consecutive weeks at Number One. The album also topped the Billboard R&B Albums Chart for three non-consecutive weeks. Toni Braxton has sold 5,135,000 album copies in the United States with 10 Million copies sold worldwide.
The accompanying music video was filmed on location in England and was directed by Randee St. Nicholas, the Los Angeles based director and photographer. She had worked on videos for Britney Spears, Carrie Underwood, Céline Dion, Trisha Yearwood, Faith Hill and Prince.
” Breathe Again ” was a commercial success for Toni. In the United States, it reached a peak of number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1994, spending thirty-five weeks on the chart there. It also reached number four on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart and two on the Mainstream Top 40 Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 15th of January 1994 and reached a peak of number two. It spent eight weeks in the Top Ten and a total of twelve weeks on the UK chart.
