” Bridge Over Troubled Water ” by the Artists for Grenfell was inspired after the tragic 24-storey Grenfell Tower fire. On the 14th of June 2017 a fire started in a block of public housing flats in North Kensington, west London, England which resulted in the country’s deadliest fire since World War Two.
London’s Metropolitan Police Service have stated that there were over 70 fatalities that have been formally identified with many more people missing, presumed dead. The fire is thought to have started in a fourth-floor flat by a faulty fridge-freezer. The speed at which the fire took hold is believed by experts to have been aided by the exterior cladding of the building, which had recently been added.
The ” Bridge Over Troubled Water ” charity single was arranged by Simon Cowell to raise money the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire and for The London Community Foundation.
He assembled some of the biggest stars in music for the single, which was recorded just half a mile from the tragety. Each artist present sings a different line from the song which opens with a new rap by Stormzy. Britain’s Got Talent winner Tokio Myers plays the piano with music legends Pete Townshend from The Who on acoustic guitar with Queen guitarist Brian May and Chic’s Nile Rodgers on electric guitars . Accompanying the line-up of stars are people from the community, a 300-strong choir led by Gareth Malone, the English choirmaster and broadcaster.
” Bridge Over Troubled Water ” went straight in at Number One on the UK Singles Chart on the 23rd of July. At the time of writing over 170,000 sales have been recorded by the Official Charts Company via digital and streaming. On the first day of release the sales reached 120,000, breaking a ten year old record for first day sales.
The song has touched both artists and fans, many have been moved to tears with the cover of the classic Simon & Garfunkel track. Simon Cowell described the song in an interview as “ Honestly…unbelievable. I mean chills. It sounds beautiful. ”
