” Budapest ” is by George Ezra ( George Ezra Barnett ), the English singer-songwriter and musician. The song was written by George Ezra and Joel Pott. Joel is the lead singer with indie band Athlete; he is also an award-winning songwriter.
The song was produced by Cam Blackwood, the English record producer, songwriter and musician. He was nominated for Breakthrough Producer of the Year by the Music Producers Guild.
The single was released on the 13th of December 2013 by Columbia Records ( owned by Sony Music Entertainment ) and taken as the second single from George’s debut UK Number One album, Wanted on Voyage. The name of the album comes from a label which used to be attached to trunks on ships asking for it not to be stored in the hold as it was needed on the voyage.
The album was released in the United States on the 27th of January 2015 and outside of the US on the 30th of June 2014. Inspiration came from a trip George had taken around Europe during May and June 2013.
Wanted on Voyage was well received by music critics and debuted at number three on the UK Albums Chart, from there it climbed to reach Number One in October 2014, four months after the initial release. Wanted on Voyage spent a total of four weeks at Number One and was the third best-selling album of 2014 in the United Kingdom.
In an interview with British newspaper, The Daily Telegraph, George said that the song was his first go at penning a love song with the composition made up of the first three guitar chords he ever learned.
During the interview, George explained that the lyrics of ” Budapest ” have nothing to do with the city in Hungary and that at the time he’d never visited the city.
He explained how he came about to write the lyrics ” I was in Malmö in Sweden, and the Eurovision Song Contest was being held in Malmö on that night, and I didn’t have a clue about it, but everyone there seemed to be really excited about it and having parties. But I didn’t know you couldn’t buy alcohol after 10 o’clock at night. So I ended up buying a bottle of like, Rum, or something like that from a guy in a park so I could have something to drink at this party. Anyway, I was meant to be getting a train to Budapest the next day, and I never got it because I was too hung-over and didn’t fancy it. So I wrote the song about being miles from Budapest “. George has since visited the city.
The accompanying music video was produced by Agile Films and directed by Rob Brandon. The award-winning video director and artist is based in East London, England.
He has worked on several of George’s videos and also has worked with many artists including Sundara Karma, Billie Marten, Gold Panda, Kodaline and Jack Beats.
An official music video for the song was first released onto YouTube on the 21st of April 2014. The idea for the video was to keep it simple and demonstrate the link between inaction and inactivity.
” Budapest ” was a commercial success for George. In the United States, the song peaked at number thirty-two on the Billboard Hot 100, spending twenty-three weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 16th of November 2013 where it reached the lower end of the chart. It was then re-released and reached a peak of number three in 2014. It spent eleven weeks in the Top Ten and a total of seventy-six weeks on the UK chart.
