The song was written by Ellie along with Ryan Tedder, Greg Kurstin, Noel Zancanella and Brent Kutzle. Production and vocal production was done by Greg Kurstin and Ryan Tedder.
” Burn ” was released as a single in 2013 as the lead single from the Album, the song was recorded by Leona Lewis and intended to be added to her third Album titled Glassheart back in 2011. However, this song was to be dropped by Leona for more ballads.
Once released as a single, ” burn ” divided music critics. Some praised the song as being catchy, while others commented on the song not being at all memorable and not one of her best offerings.
However despite to feelings of the critics, the record buying public ( the more critical people ) liked it, a commercial success in the United Kingdom saw Ellie get her first chart-topper on the UK charts and healthy sales of over 116,000 in the first week. ” Burn ” stayed at the top of the UK charts for three straight weeks.
More success followed the UK with Top Ten entries in countries like Australia, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand and Sweden.
In the United States, ” Burn ” reached number thirteen on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, along with number three on the US Mainstream Top 40 and a number twenty-two on the US Dance Club Songs chart.
The video for the song was directed by Mike Sharpe and shows Ellie dancing in an empty field with friends, with the video ending as the logo of Ellie is being formed by lights.
Ellie commented to the UK newspaper The Sun that she was proud of the song. “I hear it everywhere, and it never annoys me, even if it might annoy other people,” she said. “That’s really rare, and I love performing it because it makes people’s faces light up.”
