Call Me Blondie

” Call Me ” is by Blondie, the American new wave band founded by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. The song was written by Debbie Harry and Giorgio Moroder. Production for the single was by Giorgio Moroder. Giorgio is an Italian producer, singer, songwriter and DJ. As a producer, he has worked with artists including, Donna Summer, the Three Degrees, Harold Faltermeyer, Cher, David Bowie, Kylie and Bonnie Tyler.
” Call Me ” was released on the 1st of February 1980 by record labels Polydor, Chrysalis and Salsoul. The song was the lead song from the soundtrack to the 1980 film American Gigolo, the American romantic thriller written and directed by Paul Schrader. The film starred Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton.
Giorgio Moroder’s first choice to help with composing a song for the film’s soundtrack was Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac, the British-American rock band.
However, Stevie declined Giorgio’s offer after she had signed a contract with Modern Records which prevented her from working with Giorgio.
He looked to Debbie Harry and Blondie for help. Debbie received an instrumental demo from Giorgio called ” Man Machine “, she was asked to write the lyrics and a melody for the song, which she did in a couple of hours.
Debbie was given complete control over lyrical content, neither Giorgio or Paul Schrader placed any restriction. Debbie was pleased with the outcome and how the song just fit into the film perfectly.
” Call Me ” was a different style of song for Blondie, a break from their previous songs. Debbie explained the style change for this song ” We really tried to vary our music, and we really tried not to mimic ourselves. Once you sort of establish a formula, ( some people ) stick with it because it’s safe and people know and like it. We tried to be a little daring “.
The song was a commercial success for Blondie. In the United States, the song reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and stayed at the top for six consecutive weeks. It spent a total of twenty-five weeks on the chart there.
” Call Me ” was Blondie’s second Number One single on the Billboard Charts and their biggest seller in the US. It is listed on Billboard’s All Time Top 100 at number forty-four.
In the United Kingdom Blondie scored their fourth Number One single in just over a year. The song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 12th of April 1980. ” Call Me ” held on at the top for one week, the song spent four weeks in the Top Ten and a total of ten weeks on the UK chart. Debbie became the first woman in British chart history to write three Number One singles.
