” Candy ” is by Robbie Williams, the English singer-songwriter and former member of boyband Take That. The song was released on the 11th of September 2012, by record labels Island and Universal. ” Candy ” was written by Robbie Williams and fellow English singer & songwriter Gary Barlow, it was produced by Irish producer and mixer Jacknife Lee.
The single was released as the lead single from the album, Take the Crown. The 9th studio album by the singer topped the albums charts in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Austria, Croatia, Germany, Holland, Greece and Switzerland.
Lyrically the song, which borrows melodic elements from the nursery rhyme ” Ring a Ring o’ Roses ” and a guitar riff from Terje Olsen’s ” Eurodans “, revolves around the story of a girl who thinks too highly of herself. She could be a one, but she occasionally takes wicked ways to glorify her vanity. Robbie described the track as a summer song which he wrote spontaneously in a seamless flow.
The music video of the track was released on September 10, 2012, on YouTube. It was filmed in east London by Korean-American music and film director Joseph Kahn.
The role of the girl ( Candice ) in the video was portrayed by Kaya Scodelario of Skins-fame. The singer himself features in the video as the guardian angel of the girl. Throughout the video, Robbie is seen to be serenading around the girl to catch her attention, but she seems to be almost oblivious of his presence. However, he goes on in his pursuit and in the meantime causes several accidents to protect the girl. The video finally concludes with the singer combusting before getting merged with Candice.
A commercially successful single, In the United Kingdom, ” Candy ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 10th of November 2012 and topped the chart for two weeks. It spent six weeks in the Top Ten and twenty-four weeks on the Top 100.
The single also topped the charts in Belgium ( Flanders ), Netherlands and Scotland.
It peaked inside the Top Ten in Austria, Belgium ( Wallonia ), Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Mexico, Norway, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland.
