” Candyman ” by Christina Aguilera was released in 2007 and taken as the second single from the Album, Back to Basics.
Written by Christina Aguilera and Linda Perry, the lead singer and primary songwriter of 4 Non Blondes. Intended to be released as the second single from the Album until record label RCA released ” Hurt ” instead.
” Candyman ” is about sexual intercourse written using a mish-mash of different styles including jazz, blues and 1940s swing.
Christina and Linda wrote the song as a form of tribute to the popular 1940s singers The Andrews Sisters and their hit record ” Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy “.
A commercially successful song, ” Candyman ” entered the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States at number ninety-nine and moved up to number twenty-five, which gave Christina her fourteenth Top Forty place on the Hot 100.
Since the released, the song has sold 1,153,000 copies in the United States with the Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) awarding gold certification for sales above 500,000.
Elsewhere ” Candyman ” also reached high in various countries charts, with a number seventeen in the United Kingdom.
Across Europe, the song reached the Top 25 in Belgium, Switzerland, Ireland, Denmark and Germany.
” Candyman ” also was a hit in both Australia and New Zealand with number two positions in both countries.
The music video for the song was filmed in a Southern Californian aircraft hangar and features Christina in different coloured wigs to look like she’s singing as a trio, a tribute to the second World war singers The Andrews Sisters.
Many music critics liked ” Candyman ” as a song. However, a few disliked the overly sexual theme. IGN critic went so far as to call it a “cool” “Bugle Boy From Company C rip-off”.
Although there were mixed reviews from music critics, sales were strong and ” Candyman ” went Platinum in Australia with Gold in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand and the United States. In the United Kingdom, the song was awarded silver sales of 270,000 by the British Phonographic Industry ( BPI ).
