” Can’t Fight the Moonlight ” is by LeAnn Rimes ( Margaret LeAnn Rimes Cibrian ), the American country and pop singer. The song was written by Diane Warren, production for the song was by Trevor Horn.
The song was released on the 22nd of August 2000 by record label Curb ( later merged with MGM Records ) and was first released on the film soundtrack for Coyote Ugly.
The song was written by Diane Warren; the Grammy Award-winning songwriter has written and co-written hit singles for artists like Elton John, Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga.
Trevor Horn, also a Grammy Award winner, was the producer for this single. He had chart success as a performer with The Buggles, Yes and Art of Noise.
He has also produced for artists like Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, Cher, Grace Jones, Seal and Mike Oldfield.
” Can’t Fight the Moonlight ” was featured in the 2000 romantic musical comedy-drama film Coyote Ugly, which is based on the real-life American national chain of bars Coyote Ugly Saloon.
Originally LeAnn auditioned to sing the song at the end with Piper Perabo, who plays Violet Sanford in the film. However after LeAnn watched some clips of the film, she decided to be the voice of every song sung by Piper Perabo.
The version of ” Can’t Fight the Moonlight ” used in the film had the lyrics altered slightly to those on the version used on the soundtrack. The song used is also credited as the theme for the film.
The vocals provided for the film version are altered in their pitch, and vocal voice range, different to her natural range usually heard in her music. The strange thing about LeAnn providing the vocals for Piper Perabo and also appearing in the film meant that when LeAnn and the character played by Piper sing, LeAnn is in effect duetting with herself.
While the film received mostly negative reviews, both the criticism and any praise centred around the fact that the film came across as little more than ” hot, sexy women dancing on a bar in a wet T-shirt contest. ” The single itself received positive reviews from critics. Wendy Mitchell writing for Barnes & Noble.com had praise for the song calling it ” ultra-catchy. ”
AllMusic’s Heather Phares wrote that the song was a ” positively Britney Spearsian power ballad. ” A review in Billboard about LeAnn and the song called the song ” her most compelling pop offering yet–and one of the more intriguing compositions of late from songwriter superwoman Diane Warren. ”
The song was a commercial success for LeAnn reaching the Top Twenty in every country of release. In the United States, the song had two entries on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2000, the song peaked at number seventy-one. In 2001 and 2002 there was renewed interest, and the song climbed higher than the original 2000 peak to reach number eleven.
In the United Kingdom, ” Can’t Fight the Moonlight ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 25 of November 2000 and reached Number One, which it held for one week. The single spent seven weeks in the Top Ten and a total of twenty-two weeks on the UK chart.
The song was the 12th best-selling single of 200 in the United Kingdom and 55th of the decade.
” Can’t Fight the Moonlight ” was also Number One in Australia, Belgium ( Flanders ), Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania and Sweden.
