” Can’t Get You Out of My Head ” is by Kylie Minogue, the Australia singer. The song was written and produced by Cathy Dennis and Rob Davis.
The song was released by record label Parlophone in 2001 and taken as the lead single from Kylie’s eighth album, Fever.
There were three different release dates for the song, in Australia, the song was released on the 8th of September, in the United Kingdom it was on the 17th of September and the United States the 18th of February 2002.
There are two successful songwriters behind this song, firstly Cathy Dennis has notched up eight number ones as a songwriter and won five Ivor Novello Awards.
Secondly Rob Davis, who as a member of the glam rock band, Mud, who had the biggest selling Number One of 1974 with the single ” Tiger Feet “. He is also an Ivor Novello Award winner, along with Cathy he received the award for composing the most performed song of the year.
” Can’t Get You Out of My Head ” was the second song Rob and Cathy had written together and the whole process took just three and a half hours.
The two used Cubase music producing software to aid their writing. The finished demo was first turned down by Simon Fuller for the group S Club 7; then the song was rejected by Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Finally, it was offered to one of Kylie’s camp. Cathy explained to m-magazine.co.uk ” Even though Kylie wasn’t the first artist to be offered the song, I don’t believe it was meant to go to anyone other than Kylie, and I don’t believe anyone else would have done the incredible job she did with it, with the video, looking super-hot! ”
The mid-tempo dance tune, now with the famous ” la la la ” hook was loved by music critics. The song was described as a ” sexual come on ” by Jason Thompson from PopMatters, adding the song was ” trim and funky, certainly something that couldn’t miss anywhere. ”
AllMusic’s Chris True liked the song and picked it as the highlight of the Fever album adding that it ” pulses and grooves like no other she’s recorded. ”
Commercially ” Can’t Get You Out of My Head ” was a huge success, in Australia the song entered the Australian Recording Industry Association ( ARIA ) chart at Number One and held the top position for a month.
In the United States the song reached number seven and spent a total of nine weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, this became Kylie’s best-selling single in the US since her single ” The Locomotion ” in 1988.
In the United Kingdom, the single charted on the 29th of September 2001 at Number One and spent four weeks at the top. It spent twenty weeks in the Top Forty and a total of thirty weeks on the UK chart.
As of 2013, ” Can’t Get You Out of My Head ” is Kylie’s biggest selling single and has become one of the biggest selling singles of all time with sales of over 7 million.
