The song was taken as one of the lead singles from Ed’s 3rd Album ÷ ( pronounced Divide ). The Album was released on the 3rd of March 2017 by Asylum Records and Atlantic Records. The Album was a commercial success, it debuted at Number One in the United Kingdom, with sales of 672,000 units in the first week of release.
The Album became the fastest-selling by a male artist in the UK and the third-highest opening behind Adele’s 25 and Oasis’ Be Here Now. It also made Number One in 14 other countries, including the United States, Canada and Australia.
” Castle on the Hill ” is about Ed’s home town of Framlingham, which is market town in the county Suffolk, England. Lyrically he looks back of times when he and his friends were ” smoking hand-rolled cigarettes ” and getting ” drunk ” at this place. The castle mentioned is Framlingham Castle. The castle, built on the site of an earlier Norman motte and bailey it dates from the 12th century. Today,the castle Castle is managed by English Heritage and run as a tourist attraction. The structure is protected under UK law as a grade I listed building and a scheduled monument.
The accompanying video for the song was released on the 23rd January 2017 and directed by George Belfield. George hasworked with a variety of artists including Tom Odell, Paloma Faith, Wet, Arthur Beatrice and Kwabs. The video was filmed on various locations in Suffolk which included Framlingham, Boyton marshes, Mildenhall Stadium and Felixstowe.
George Belfield said of the video in an interview with Luke Bather of promonews ” I wanted to make a video about young people that wasn’t urban and hard-edged. ” Castle on the Hill ” was a commercial success for Ed. In the United States the song made its debut and peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart with sales of 171,000 downloads and gaining 13 million streams in its debut week. It spent 10 weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom the song debuted at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart on the 19th of January 2017 with sales 193,000 combined units in the first week. Ed also debuted at Number One with ” Shape of You “, which made him the only artist in UK chart history to debut in the top two positions in the same week. The song spent 10 weeks in the top ten and a total of 10 weeks on the UK chart.
