” Chasing Pirates ” is by Norah Jones ( Geetali Norah Jones Shankar ), the American singer, songwriter and actress. The song was written by Norah with production for the song by Jacquire King.
Jacquire is an American record producer, engineer and mixer. He has worked with artists including Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, James Bay, Modest Mouse and Buddy Guy. To date, Jacquire’s work has received more than 30 Grammy nominations.
” Chasing Pirates ” was released on the 13th of October 2009 by record labels Blue Note and EMI. Blue Note is an American record label specialising in Jazz; the label was started in 1939 and currently comes under Universal Music Group.
The song was taken as the lead single from Norah’s fourth album, The fall, to date the album has worldwide sales of over three million copies.
Lyrically the song is just about Norah not being able to sleep due to a message left by her boyfriend ” In your message you said; you were goin’ to bed “.
Some interpret the lyrics as using ” Chasing Pirates ” as a figure of speech to mean that Norah is chasing after a dream lover who is not as keen.
In an interview Norah shed some light on how ” Chasing Pirates ” was born, ” About a year ago, I did some demos in my home studio. I had some friends come in, and we figured out a cool arrangement for ‘Chasing Pirates,’ with a cool drum part. It went somewhere I didn’t expect it to go, and that became a direction to look in “.
The accompanying music video was directed by Rich Lee, the American music video and commercial director. Rich has directed videos for artists including, Maroon 5, Eminem and The Black Eyed Peas.
VH1 aired the full version of the video on the 27th of October 2009, at the beginning of the video Norah finds a bottle with a map of Manhattan in it. She then can be seen on a roof steering a building with a large ship’s wheel as she tries to find what is marked on the map she’d discovered. Towards the end of the video the building, complete with ship’s sales can be seen sailing down the streets.
Commercially the song wasn’t a huge success. In the United States, it reached number 100 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. In the United Kingdom, it didn’t do much better with a chart position of eighty-seven.
