Artist: OMI

Date of release: 19 May 2014

Description: ” Cheerleader ” by OMI the Jamaican singer was released in 2015 and virtually dominated the charts Worldwide.
Written by OMI ( Omar Samuel Pasley ) , Mark Bradford along with Clifton and Ryan Dillon. OMI started working on the melody for ” Cheerleader ” back in 2008. The melody was worked on for several years, then OMI recorded the track with creative Jamaican production duo Sly and Robbie and Jamaican saxophonist Dean Fraser.
After being released as a single on Oufah the independent Reggae/Pop music label, the song enjoyed success in Jamaica where it secured a number one for OMI.
A number one in Jamaica wasn’t quite enough and OMI needed to get the song out to a much bigger audience, so in 2013 he signed to Ultra Music, a US dance label.
The new record company produced remixes, one remix stood out and was favoured by both the label and producers. A young German DJ by the name of Felix Jaehn produced a remix that stayed true to the original musical style.
The new remix included trumpet and piano along with a conga beat which gives ” Cheerleader ” the sunny feel good feel it has become World famous for.
An extended remix was released the label in 2014, by the end of that year the song started to gain traction. In 2015 the record began to dominate the airways and charts of several countries including top slots in the US, UK, Germany, France and Australia.
Many put the Worldwide success of the song down to music streaming, on Spotify for example ” Cheerleader ” had plays of approximately 450 million. Alongside the popularity on Spotify, the song also had success on iTunes with a number one slot in over 55 markets.
The song is a record breaker in the United Kingdom with being the longest running number one by a Jamaican artist.
