“ Chun-Li ” is a song released by the female Trinidadian-American rapper Nicki Minaj ( Onika Tanya Miraj ) on 12 April 2018 as the first single for her upcoming album titled Queen. The song is a production by J.Reid of Chevi Muzic who also credits Nicki Minaj as the co-producer, published in Digital streaming format by Young Money and Cash Money Records which is a recording brand founded by rapper Lil Wayne and the William Brothers respectively.
The American rapper and songwriter was born on 8th December 1982 in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago but raised in Queens, New York. She had pursued an acting career and previously worked in various jobs before turning to music. She first signed with Full Force and released her first mixed tape in 2007 called Playtime is Over which was followed by Sucka Free in 2008 and Beam Me Up Scotty in 2009.
She gained global recognition when she debuted in the Top 20 US Billboard Hot Rap Song for “ I Get Crazy ” and later signed by Lil Wayne. She became a global pop icon with the release of the pop-R&B hit “ Your Love ” on March 2010 in her album Pink Friday which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200. She had collaborated with many pop and rap artists such as Ariana Grande, Jessie J, Drake, Cardi B and Chris Brown to name a few.
“ Chun-Li ” was released along with Barbie Tingz through YouTube on 12th April 2018. On its release, the song gained over a million views within a week and hit number seven in the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and US Rhythmic Chart.
The song was written by the quirky rapper to defend her reputation against the “ bad guy ” image that social media plasters on her. The title of the song stems from the online combat game StreetFighter which features a female fighter by the same name. It shows her volatile and upfront personality that won the hearts of many sceptical critics.
“ Chun-Li ” peaked at number two in New Zealand and launched from number ninety-seven to number ten in the US Billboard Hot 100 within the first week of its release. It also became the top trending on Twitter just two days after the dual release with “ Barbie Tingz ”. The song is certified Gold in Canada and the USA (RIAA).
The music video which released on 4th Mays 2018 on YouTube starts with a subtle poetic intro of the song and her reason for transforming into a fighter character. It is a modern Afro-Asian dance club-themed video in neon lights and features the rapper in skimpy glam attires and her trade-mark make-up and fresh hair-do.
The music is not unique in style, but it shows her musical creativity. It has a slow sonic effect, down-tempo synths and an old-school New York drum beat that proceeds to faster percussion and slows down again, giving the music a slow-paced hip-hop vibe.
The lyrics highly focus on haters and keyboard warriors who always try to paint her in a bad light. It is also rumoured to be a song against a competitor in the music industry. Her rap flow is sharp, and the lyrics show her determination to mark her comeback as one of the greatest female rappers in the contemporary music industry.
