” Club Tropicana ” is by Wham!, the English pop duo formed by George Michael ( Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou ) and Andrew Ridgeley. The song was written by both George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley.
Production for the single was by Steve Brown and George Michael. Steve Brown is a British producer whose career started with Sir Elton John in 1972. Steve has worked with many artists including Queen’s Freddie Mercury, ABC, The Manic Street Preachers, Randy Edelman, The Cult and Wham!.
” Club Tropicana ” was released on the 23rd of July 1983 by record label Innervision Records, the record label released their final single two years later and finally went bankrupt the same year. The song was taken as the fourth and final single from Wham’s debut UK and New Zealand Number One album, Fantastic.
The song was seen by many to be a dig at cheap holiday deals that became popular during the 1980s and especially the then favourite club 18 to 30’s holidays.
The accompanying music video was directed by Duncan Gibbins. Duncan was a British music video and film director; he was also a screenwriter. He had worked on videos for Eurythmics, ABC, Glenn Frey and Bananarama.
Duncan died in 1993 from burns sustained after rescuing a cat from a burning building, although he was saved still conscious and suffering 95% burns, he yet asked about the cat. After Duncan died, the cat was found a few days later with just minor wounds and without any serious injury.
The video was filmed on location at Pikes Hotel in Ibiza in the Balearic Islands of Spain; the hotel is now called Ibiza Rocks House. The luxury hotel was converted from a 15th-century mansion in 1978 by Anthony Pike, a British born Australian.
Wham’s backing singers also appear in the video, Dee C. Lee and Shirlie Holliman can be seen in bikini’s on a beach being eyed by both George and Andrew. The beach scene was filmed on location at Cala Conta Beach which is north-west of the Spanish island of Ibiza. They also appear sipping cocktails while relaxing by a pool. The video has a twist which is revealed at the end, George and Andrew were airline pilots and Dee and Shirlie air stewardesses.
The song was a commercial success. In the United Kingdom ” Club Tropicana ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 30th of July 1983 and reached a peak of number four. The song spent five weeks in the Top Ten and a total of eleven weeks on the UK chart. It ended 1983 as the 39th best-selling single of that year.
