Convoy C. W. McCall

” Convoy ” is by C. W. McCall ( William Dale Fries, Jr. ), the American singer. The song was written by C. W. McCall and Chip Davis with production by don Spears and Chip Davis.
The song is about a CB radio ( Citizen Band ) trucker conversation using CB slang to describe a rebellious trucker as he drives across America.
CB’s first appeared in America in the late 1950s; they were only used by farmers and Ham radio operators. The radios were a simplified version of the two-way police radios.
The then creative director of advertising agency Bozell & Jacobs William Dale Fries, Jr., created a campaign for Metz Baking Company of Iowa.
He created a character called C. W. McCall; a truck driver played at the time by actor Jim Finlayson.
The campaign was so successful that William was signed to MGM record label as the character C. W. McCall.
William got the idea for ” Convoy ” when out driving and listening to his CB radio, seeing a road sign triggered the idea and the song was born.
The leader ( Front door ) of the convoy was ” Rubber Duck ” with other truckers such as ” Pig Pen following behind, before long they had eighty-five trucks and the police ( Bears, Smokey’s ) in pursuit.
The song entered the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart in the United States where it reached Number One and held the top spot for six weeks. ” Convoy ” also reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for one week. It spent sixteen weeks on the chart there.
In December 1975, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded it a Gold Disc for sales of over 2,000,000.
The song kept Barry Manilow’s ” I Write The Songs ” from the top of the chart during the week of January 10th 1976.
In the United Kingdom, C. W. McCall reached number two, where the song spent ten weeks in the Top Ten and a total of ten weeks on the UK chart.
” Convoy ” was the song that inspired the film of the same name based entirely on the song. The 1978 film was directed by Sam Peckinpah and starred Kris Kristofferson, Ali MacGraw, Burt Young and Ernest Borgnine.
