Description: ” Crucified ” is by Army of Lovers, the Swedish dance music group formed in 1987. The founding members were Alexander Bard, Jean-Pierre Barda and Camilla Henemark ( known as La Camilla). The group became just as famous for their outlandish appearance as for their music. They took their name from a German documentary called Armee der Liebenden oder Aufstand der Perverse ( Army of Lovers or Revolt of the Perverts ) released in 1979 and directed by Rosa von Praunheim. The film was shot mainly in San Francisco and chronicled gay activism in the United States during the 1970s.
The original members were Alexander Bard ( Alexander Bengt Magnus Bard ), a Swedish philosopher, songwriter, record producer and TV personality, born in Motala, Sweden. He is also religious and political activist.
Jean-Pierre Barda is a Swedish singer, actor, make up artist and hair dresser. He was born in Paris, later moving to Sweden when he was a child. He is well-known in Sweden as a hair-dresser and make-up artist.
Camilla Henemark is a Swedish singer and actress. She is also an active political spokesperson and former fashion model. Born in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, she was better known for her stage name La Camilla.
” Crucified ” was written by Alexander Bard, Jean-Pierre Barda and Anders Wollbeck ( Anders Wilhelm Axel Wollbeck ), who is a Swedish songwriter and producer. Anders has worked with a variety of artists including Alcazar, Midi, Maxi & Efti, Vacuum, Rachel Stevens, Monrose, Tarja Turunen, Cinema Bizarre and Vengaboys.
The song was released on the 3rd of April 1991 by record label Ton Son Ton and taken as the first single from their second Album, Massive Luxury Overdose, which was released in 1991 and features some of their biggest sellers including ” Crucified “, which reached Number One in twenty-nine countries and ” Obsession “.
Alexander Bard is known to masterminded the group while Jean-Pierre Barda concentrated more on the lead vocals. The two male members of the group were the only ones present thoughout lineup changes. In 1991 Camilla Henemark ( La Camilla ) left and was replaced with Michaela Dornonville de la Cour. Dominika Peczynski joined the others in 1993 and so made the group a four piece for the first time. She left 2 years later and Camilla Henemark came back.
The accompanying music video was directed by Fredrik Boklund and Martin Persson. Fredrik Boklund is a Swedish director who has worked with many artists including Mark Wahlberg, Jellyfish, U 96 and Dr. Alban. He moved to Asia in the mid 90s and now works in advertising for companies like Pepsi and Panasonic in Japan.
Martin Persson is a Swedish and producer, he has worked as a producer or executive producer on many videos including The Cardigans ” love fool ” and Saint Etienne ” Sylvie “.
The song was a commercial success for Army of Lovers. A hit in many European countries, reaching the Top Ten in Germany, Sweden, Austria and Switzerland. In Belgium it reached Number One.
In the United States the song was popular in the clubs and had a lot of airplay, although it didn’t make the Billboard Hot 100 Chart it did reach number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart.
In the United Kingdom ” Crucified ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 17th of August 1991 and reached a peak of number forty-seven. The song spent five weeks on the chart there.
A re-issue saw the song enter the UK chart again on the 15th of February 1992 and peak at number thirty-one, again spending five weeks on the UK chart.
