” Da Da Da ” is by Trio, a German band formed in 1980 in the small German town of Großenkneten, in the district of Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. Trio consisted of Stephan Remmler, Gert Krawinkel and Peter Behrens.
The central principle behind their music was to remove just about everything from their songs and leave the simplest of composition, most of Trio’s songs consisted of only three chords, many of their work is just made up of drums, guitar and vocals. They often used a couple of other instruments in their music.
” Da Da Da ” is often used instead of the song’s full title ” Da Da Da I Don’t Love You You Don’t Love Me Aha Aha Aha “, and is the most famous of their songs.
The song was written by Stephan Remmler and Gert ‘Kralle’ Krawinkel with production for the single by Klaus Voormann, the German artist, musician, and record producer. As an artist he designed artwork for the Beatles, the Bee Gees and Wet Wet Wet, as a musician, he was the bassist for Manfred Mann from 1966 to 1969, and as a producer, he is best known for his work with Trio.
” Da Da Da ” was released in 1982 by record label Mercury Records ( Universal Music Group ) and features on their 1981 debut album, TRIO. There were three studio albums released before they split in 1986, TRIO Live Im Frühjahr ’82 (” Live in Spring ’82 “), Bye Bye / Trio And Error ( 1983 ) and Whats the Password ( 1985 ).
The song was part of the Neue Deutsche Welle, in English New German Wave, a type of German rock music coming initially from post-punk and new wave music fused with influences of electronic music.
” Da Da Da ” became extremely popular despite the repetitive nature of the song. Along with the repetitive drums, lead singer Stephan Remmler plays a Casio VL-1 also known as the VL-Tone.
Trio had three more Top Ten hits in their native Germany before splitting for good in 1986, Stephan Remmler is the only surviving member. Gert Krawinkel died in 2014 and Peter Behrens in 2016.
” Da Da Da ” was a commercial success for Trio. In the United States, the song peaked at number thirty-three on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 3rd of June 1982 and reached a peak of number two. It spent four weeks in the Top Ten and a total of ten weeks on the UK chart.
