Artist: Olly Murs
Date of release: 18 November 2011
Description: ” Dance with me tonight ” is by Olly Murs ( Oliver Stanley “Olly” Murs ), the English singer-songwriter, television presenter and actor.
The song was written by Olly Murs, Steve Robson and Claude Kelly. Steve Robson co-wrote and produced tracks for One Direction including ” Everything about you “, ” Same mistakes ” and ” Summer love “.
Claude Kelly has written songs for Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis and Whitney Houston.
” Dance with me tonight ” was released by record labels Syco and Epic on the 18th of November 2011 and taken as the second single from Olly’s second Album ” In case you didn’t know “.
Olly teamed up with Steve Robson and Claude Kelly to write the song in the spring of 2011. They had previously worked together on Olly’s UK debut number one single ” Please don’t let me go “.
The inspiration for the lyrics came from Olly’s frustration of todays style of dating, especially the now common use of Facebook and Twitter along with various other social networking sites.
Olly summed up his frustration with modern dating techniques ” I’m sick of Twitter and Facebook, you know, I want to meet a girl in a club or in a bar. Everytime I meet a girl they’re like ‘Just add me on Facebook, or Tweet me’, and it’s like why don’t we go out on a proper date like we used to back in the early 2000s, go for a proper drink and get to know her? So I went into the studio and just went, ‘OK, I wanna write a really old, classic song about seeing a really fit girl in a club and taking her out on a date.'”
The accompanying music video was directed by Marcus Lundin who is based in Stockholm, Sweden. Along with music videos he has also worked on videos for Beats by Dre, nike and Microsoft.
The video took one day to film on location in Putney, South West London in the United Kingdom. Shot around the iconic Putney Wharf Tower, Putney Bridge, with snapshots of Fulham, Fulham Palace Road, Lysia Street and Bishops Park Road also used.
A lyric video which featured clips from Olly’s time in America and fans dancing was used for the US release.
Music critics gave ” Dance with me tonight ” a mixed response. Five out of five stars were awarded by Hit the Floor magazine, they called it a ” great do-wop 50’s style number that will no doubt reach the uppermost rankings of the chart “.
Popcrush.com awarded the single four stars out of five and wrote ” ‘Dance With Me Tonight’ shimmers and shines, but it’s by no means sanitized “.
However Digital Spy’s Robert Copsey awarded only three stars out of five. He had the most criticism for the sound of the song and the lyrics. He wrote that ” the swinging ’60s funk-pop sound of his latest effort might not be the most original, and the lyrics are cheesier than a tube of Primula “. He did, however, praise the song for being ” unashamedly fun “.
Commercially the song was a success for Olly. In the United States the song reached number 23 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100.
In the United Kingdom, ” Dance with me tonight ” entered the UK chart at number two on the 27th of November 2011. After three weeks on the chart the song moved up to take the number one slot where it spent one week.
The song spent 8 weeks in the top ten and a total of 36 weeks on the UK chart. The song became Olly’s third number one single in the United Kingdom.
In Ireland ” Dance with me tonight ” peaked at number two on the Irish singles chart, this to date is Olly’s highest charting single there.
