” Dancing On the Ceiling ” is by Lionel Richie ( Lionel Brockman Richie Jr. ), the American singer, songwriter, actor and record producer. Lionel’s career began in the mid-60s. However, it wasn’t until 1968 when he joined the Commodores as a singer and saxophonist, that he tasted real success.
The Commodores were awarded a Grammy in 1986 for the US and UK hit single ” Nightshift “, In 2003 they inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame. They went on to sell over 60 million records for their record label, Motown.
In 1982, Lionel embarked on a solo career and in 1985, along with Michael Jackson, he wrote the charity single ” We Are the World “, which was performed by United Support of Artists (USA) for Africa. The single sold 20 million copies and went on to top the charts around the world including the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart.
Lionel has won the Grammy Awards five times and has been awarded the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s highest honour, the Johnny Mercer Award. He is one of the world’s best-selling music artists of all time with sales of over 100 million records worldwide.
” Dancing On the Ceiling ” was written by Lionel Richie, Carlos Rios and Michael Frenchik. The single was produced by Lionel Richie and James Anthony Carmichael, the American Grammy-winning musician, arranger, and record producer.
During the 1960s, he began working as a freelancer with various Motown artists including the Four Tops, the Miracles and the Supremes. James then signed with Motown to work exclusively as an arranger. He went on to work with the Miracles, the Jackson 5, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight. When Lionel left the Commodores in 1982 and went solo, James him and they went on to co-produce all of Lionel Richie’s singles and Albums.
” Dancing On the Ceiling ” was released on the 15th of July 1986 by record label Motown ( Universal Music Group ) and taken as the lead single from Lionel’s third studio album of the same name. The album, released on the 5th of August 1986, was initially titled Say You, Say Me after his Billboard Hot 100 Chart Number One single. The title was changed after Lionel reworked the album. It peaked at the top the Billboard 200 Chart and sold 4 million copies.
The accompanying music video was directed by Stanley Donen, the American film director and choreographer. He is best known for co-directing, along with Gene Kelly, the musical-romantic comedy film Singin’ in the Rain and On the Town, the musical movie featuring the music of Leonard Bernstein and Roger Edens. In 1998, Stanley received an Honorary Academy Award for his work and in 2004 was awarded a Career Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
” Dancing On the Ceiling ” was a commercial success for Lionel. In the United States, the song reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986, spending seventeen weeks on the chart there.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 26th of July 1986 and reached a peak of number seven. It spent one week in the Top Ten and a total of eleven weeks on the UK chart.
