” Dark horse ” features rapper Juicy J ( Jordan Michael Houston ) the American rapper, songwriter and record producer from Memphis, Tennessee. Juicy J is a founding member of Three 6 Mafia, the Southern hip hop group.
The song was released on the 17th of December 2013 by record label Capitol Records (a division of Universal Music Group ) and taken as the third single from Katy’s fourth Album ” Prism “.
” Dark horse ” is a term that originally came from horse racing, it was a horse that was unknown so was difficult to place betting odds. The dictionary meaning is ” a person who keeps their interests and ideas secret, especially someone who has a surprising ability or skill “.
The saying is thought to go back to Benjamin Disraeli, the twice British Prime minister. Although the saying and origins are clear, Katy and fellow writer Sarah Hudson took their inspiration from the film Craft, the 1996 American supernatural horror film directed by Andrew Fleming.
The accompanying music video was directed by Mathew Cullen, who had worked with Katy before on ” California Gurls “. Katy’s idea for the video was to combine both Ancient Egyptian culture with Memphis, Tennessee hip hop ( a nod to Juicy J, who came from Memphis, Tennessee ). The setting for the video was Memphis in Egypt, today the ruins of the city can be found near the town of Mit Rahina, roughly 20 km (12 mi) south of Giza.
The video for ” Dark horse ” became controversial when some Muslims objected to a scene in the video where a pendant showing the Arabic word for “Allah” disintegrates into sand by Katy’s character. The scene was removed after a petition on Change.org reached 65,000 signatures, soon after the offending scene was removed the petition was closed on the site.
” Dark horse ” was a commercial success for Katy and Juicy J. In the United States the song made a debut at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and climbed to reach Number One. The song spent 3 weeks on the chart there and gave Katy her ninth US Number One.
In the United Kingdom the song entered the UK chart on the 28th of September 2013 and reached a peak of number 4. The song spent 8 weeks in the top ten and a total of 48 weeks on the UK chart.
