After 2002 Schiller became just one artist, Christopher von Deylen. The German electronic musician is named after the German poet and dramatist Friedrich Schiller who worked with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe on Xenien, a collection of short satirical poems which challenged those opposed to their philosophical vision.
As a duo their 2002 track ” Dream of You ” won Schiller the ECHO award for the Best Dance Single of the Year. ECHO is Deutsche Phono-Akademie, an association of German record companies who award German musicians for their musical accomplishments.
” Das Glockenspiel ” was written by Christopher von Deylen and Mirko von Schlieffen who also produced the track. The song was released on the 31st of December 1998 by record label Zeitgeist ( Universal Music Group ) and taken from the debut Album Zeitgeist ( Spirit of the Age ).
The Album featured another two singles that reached the top 30 on the German music charts, Liebesschmerz and Ruhe. The Album also reached the top 30 of the German long play charts.
The song was recorded and mixed at HOME Studios ( owned by Miloco ) in Hamburg. The studio has played host to a variety of international artists including Mariah Carey, Nena, Lauryn Hill, Santana, 50 Cent and Eminem.
The song is best known for the bell-like melody. The inspiration for the track came from the 1798 poem by Friedrich Schiller. The 430 line poem is one of the most famous of all German literature. The poem was part of the high school curriculum in Germany until around 1950, today the poem is regarded as part of Germany’s cultural heritage.
The accompanying music video was filmed in Chinatown in Los Angeles, California. The original Chinatown which grew in the late 1800s but later was demolished to make way for a new development in 1938.
Director for the video was German Marcus Sternberg who has worked with artists like Anastacia, Melanie C, Nena and Brooklyn Bounce. The video features dancers and people playing a Mahjong game, which originated in China during the Qing dynasty ( last of China’s imperial dynasty’s ). The video also features a ringing bell and a woman in traditional costume.
The song was a commercial success for Schiller. In the United Kingdom it entered the UK chart on the 4th of November 2000 and reached a peak of number 79. Later in 2001 ” Das Glockenspiel ” made another entry on the UK chart on the 28th of April and peaked at number 17. It spent 1 week in the top twenty and a total of 4 weeks on the UK chart.
In Schiller’s native Germany the song reached a peak of number 21 and spent 10 weeks on the GfK Entertainment Charts. It also reached number 38 in Switzerland.
