Description: ” Deeply Dippy ” is by Right Said Fred, the Ivor Novello Award-winning British band. Before forming the group, Fred and Richard Fairbrass had been playing music since the latter part of the 1970s. They were in a band called The Actors, touring the United Kingdom with Suicide, the American musical duo.
They also supported the English rock band Joy Division at the Factory club in Manchester, United Kingdom. The nightclub, which plays music from indie to drum ‘n’ bass is located on the corner of Princess Street & Charles Street in the heart of Manchester City Centre. Still going strong today, it’s popular with students from the nearby universities.
Right Said Fred was formed in 1989 by Fred and Richard, with Fred on guitar and Richard on lead vocals and bass. The third member, Rob Manzoli joined as a guitarist in 1990.
The name for the group came from a 1962 novelty song ” Right Said Fred ” by Bernard Cribbins, the English character actor and voice-over artist.
Bernard’s career has spanned over seventy years, with appearances in films like Carry On Jack, Carry On Spying, Daleks – Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D, Casino Royale and The Railway Children.
As narrator, Bernard worked on many shows including The Wombles, a stop-motion animated British television series. Written by Elisabeth Beresford, it was first aired in 1973. Years ahead of their time, The Wombles lived underground, collecting and recycling human rubbish.
In the 2011 Birthday Honours, Bernard was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire ( OBE ) for services to drama.
To date, Right Said Fred have released eight studio Albums, two Compilation Albums, twenty-one singles and eighteen videos.
The song was written by Fred Fairbrass, Richard Fairbrass and Rob Manzoli. Production for the single was by TommyD ( Tommy Asher Danvers ) the British producer, songwriter and mixer. As a producer, he has worked with artists including Catatonia, KT Tunstall and Corinne Bailey Rae. In his songwriting career, he has worked with many of the biggest names in music including Kylie Minogue, Janet Jackson, Noel Gallagher, Kanye West, Jay Z, Beyoncé and Adele.
” Deeply Dippy ” was released on the 9th of March 1992 by record labels Tug Records ( defunct ) in the United Kingdom and Charisma ( Universal Music Group ) in the United States. The song was taken as the third release from Right Said Fred’s debut Album, UP.
The Album, released on the 16th of March 1992, is their only Album release in the United States. UP features their single United States Top Forty hit, ” I’m Too Sexy “, which reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for three weeks in February of 1992. The single failed to reach the top of the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number two.
The Album reached Number One on the UK Albums Chart and in the United States it reached number forty-six on the Billboard 200 Chart.
In an interview for the book, 1000 UK Number One Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, Richard explained about what the song’s title ” I’m not sure what it actually means, it’s just an expression that came from an episode of Jeeves and Wooster, I think. ” The TV series, Jeeves and Wooster, is a British comedy-drama series, starring Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, which was adapted from P. G. Wodehouse’s Jeeves stories.
The accompanying music video was directed by James Lebon, who was a British film and music video director. Born on the 3rd of May 1959, he also taught fashion photography at London College of Fashion. During his career in the music industry, James worked with Erasure, D:Ream, Stiltskin and Bomb The Bass. James died on the 22nd of December 2008.
” Deeply Dippy ” was a commercial success for Right Said Fred. In the United States, the song reached number nine on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart, spending twelve weeks on the chart. It didn’t enter the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 21st of March 1992 and reached Number One, spending three weeks at the top. It spent eight weeks in the Top Ten and a total of fourteen weeks on the UK chart.
