” Diamonds ” is by Rihanna, the Barbadian singer. The song was written by singer Sia Furler ( Sia ) and producers Benny Blanco and StarGate, the record producers and songwriters from Norway.
Taken from Rihanna’s seventh album, Unapologetic, released in 2012 the song talks about positive aspects of love, different from Rihanna’s general outlook on relationships.
The style of ” Diamonds ” would be familiar with fans of singer-songwriter Sia, her style is noticeable in the song.
The mid-tempo pop ballad is intertwined with synthesisers and orchestral sounds that overlay the electronic backing rhythms to give the track an atmospheric feel.
The song had critics divided; some praised the song and Rihanna’s softer direction, others commented on the passionate delivery.
However, a few were to less enthusiastic with one going as far as to describe the song as a ” chugging, faintly misty-eyed, middle of the road pop song. ”
In the United States, the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number sixteen and notched up first week sales of 133,000 copies. After three weeks it climbed to reach number eight and in doing so became Rihanna’s 23rd Top Ten single.
” Diamonds ” reached the coveted Number One spot and became the 12th chart-topper for her in the United States. Rihanna dislodged Mariah Carey as the female artist with the fastest to gain twelve Number Ones, Rihanna did it in six years and seven months, with Mariah taking seven years, one month, and two weeks.
In the United States ” Diamonds ” sold over 3.52 million copies and was certified 5x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ).
Canada was to be another success for Rihanna, there the song entered the Canadian Hot 100 Chart at number nine and moved to take the top spot, spending four weeks at the top. The song was to be the sixth number one for her on the chart and was certified Platinum by Music Canada with sales in the region of 80,000.
In the United Kingdom, ” Diamonds ” entered the UK Singles Chart at the top, giving her a 7th Number One in the UK. It spent one week at Number One and fifty weeks on the chart.
