The series was broadcast in America from 1975 to 1979 via the ABC network. The series became an international hit with the show being aired in many countries around the World including the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Australia.
After dropping out of college, David needed a way to support himself, so turned to singing. He began singing folk songs in the Midwest, opening for the likes of the Byrds, the Doors and the Ramsey Lewis Trio.
David decided that he’d have better luck in New York so he sent a photo with his face covered by a ski mask to an agency there. The agency, William Morris Agency, liked what they saw and so his television career began by his face being covered. Known as the Covered Man, he became a regular performer on popular talk show the Merv Griffin Show. David explained on the show why his face was covered ” My name is David Soul and I want to be known for my music. ”
As a singer, David had a successful career during the 1970’s, between 1976 and 1978 he had five top twenty singles and two Albums which made the top ten in the United Kingdom.
” Don’t Give Up on Us ” was written and produced by Tony Macaulay ( Anthony Gordon Instone ), the award winning English songwriter, composer for musical theatre and author. Tony has won the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors Award on two occasions as ‘ Songwriter of the Year ‘, once in 1970 and again in 1977.
As a songwriter he has won the Ivor Novello Award nine times and is the only British person to win the Edwin Forrest Award for outstanding contribution to the American theatre.
The song was released by record label Private Stock Records ( closed down in 1978 ) in 1976 in the United Kingdom and 1977 in the United States.
The song was a commercial success for David. In the United States the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 Chart on the 29th of January debuting at number 74, after being on the chart for 11 weeks it reached Number One, spending 1 week at the top and a total of 19 weeks on the chart there. The song also spent 1 week at Number One on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart.
In the United Kingdom ” Don’t Give Up on Us ” entered the UK Singles Chart on the 18th of December 1976 and reached a peak of Number One, spending 4 weeks at the top. The song spent 9 weeks in the top ten and a total of 16 weeks on the UK chart. In the United Kingdom alone the song has sold 1.16 Million copies.
