Song Title: Doop
Date of release: February 7, 1994
Description: ” Doop ” by Doop, a techno group from the Netherlands. The song was written and produced by Peter Garnefski and Frederik Ferry Ridderhof.
The song was the first single from the duo’s debut Album ” Circus Doop ” which was released by various record labels including MCA Records in the United States and City Beat in the United Kingdom.
” Doop ” is a Techno dance remix of the Charleston dance. Originally the dance craze was written by American Jazz pianist and composer James P. Johnson in the 1920’s.
The song was the first instrumental to reach the top slot in the United Kingdom for 20 years. The producers of ” Doop ” realised similarities between Jazz music from the 1920’s and House music from the 1990’s, so decided to mix them together.
Although classed as an instrumental, the song actually has some vocals added. The title of the track is repeated by flapper girls multiple times throughout the 3.35 minutes.
In doing so they created the instrumental that was to reach the number slot in the United Kingdom and enter the charts in various countries including Australia, US, and many European charts.
” Doop ” was to be the second song with the artist of the same name as the song’s title to become a number one in the United kingdom. The song ” Mr Blobby ” by mr Blobby was the first to achieve this.
Despite a certain amount of ridicule from critics, the song was a popular song in the clubs at the time. In the United States the song reached number two on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.
In the United Kingdom the song reached number one and held the top slot for three weeks and six week inside the top ten. In total the song spent thirteen weeks on the UK Charts.
The song was certified Gold on April 1st 1994 in the UK with sales of 400,000.
