” Drive ” is by The Cars, the former American rock band that appeared out of the 1970s new wave scene. Originating in Boston, Massachusetts, the group consisted of singer, rhythm guitarist and songwriter Ric Ocasek, singer and bassist Benjamin Orr, lead guitarist Elliot Easton, keyboardist Greg Hawkes and drummer David Robinson.
The song was written by Ric Ocasek, the American songwriter, musician and record producer grew up in Baltimore, Maryland in the United States. He found success as a founding member of The Cars, which had many successful songs from 1978 to 1988.
Production for the single was by Robert John ” Mutt ” Lange and the members of the band. Robert is a British – South African record producer and songwriter. He has worked with a diverse range of artists such as AC/DC, Def Leppard, The Boomtown Rats, Foreigner, Michael Bolton, The Cars, Bryan Adams, Huey Lewis and the News, Billy Ocean, The Corrs, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga, Nickelback, and Muse. He has also written and produced songs with his then-wife, Shania Twain, the Canadian singer.
” Drive ” was released on the 23rd of July 1984 by record label Elektra ( Warner Music Group ) and taken from the band’s fifth Album, Heartbeat City. The Album, released on the 13th of March 1984, features a total of five Billboard Hot 100 Chart Top Forty singles. The Album reached Number One on the New Zealand Albums (RMNZ) Chart, number three on the Billboard 200 and number twenty-five on the UK Albums Chart.
The melancholy song was sung by Benjamin Orr ( Benjamin Orzechowski ). Benjamin was an American musician, most famously as a singer, bassist and co-founder of the rock band the Cars. He was lead vocalist on many of their well-known songs, including ” Just What I Needed “, ” Let’s Go ” and ” Drive “. He also had a modest solo hit with ” Stay the Night “. In April 2000, Benjamin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died in October that same year.
The accompanying music video was directed by Timothy Hutton, the American actor and director. Timothy is the youngest male actor to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor ( at the age of 20 ) for his performance as Conrad Jarrett in Ordinary People, the 1980 American drama film.
The video features Paulina Porizkova, the Czech model, actress and author. She is also the wife of songwriter Ric Ocasek. The video cuts between shots of Benjamin Orr sitting in a disused nightclub, facing mannequins posed at the bar as customers and bartender, and scenes that depict the breakdown of a relationship between the characters played by Ric Ocasek and Paulina Porizkova.
” Drive ” was a commercial success for The Cars. In the United States, the song peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent nineteen weeks on the chart there. It reached Number One on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart and spent a total of twenty-one weeks on that chart.
In the United Kingdom, it entered the UK Singles Chart on the 22nd of September 1984 and reached a peak of number four. ” Drive ” spent eight weeks in the Top Ten and a total of twenty-seven weeks on the UK chart.
