Another of the co-writers for the single was Ina Wroldsen. She wrote the 2015 hit single ” How Deep Is Your Love ” by Calvin Harris and Disciples.
” Ego ” was released on the 3rd of January 2010 by record labels Polydor and Fascination. Record label Fascination is based in the UK and is part of the Universal Music Group. The song was taken as the second single from The Saturdays second album, Wordshaker.
Lyrically the song is a put-down, they refer to a former relationship with someone who’s ego is too large. In an interview with BBC News Vanessa White explained the meaning of the song ” It’s about being in a relationship where the passion has gone – so you’re missing that spark. It’s quite deep, actually, for a pop song. ”
The accompanying music video was directed by Mike Simpson & Robin Van Calcar and shot in the United Kingdom. The girls are dressed as superheroes throughout the video. Choreography for the video was by David Leighton, David has worked with artists like Diana Ross, Robbie Williams, Take That, Girls Aloud and Steps. He is actively involved in many parts of the industry and gives regular workshops and lectures for IDTA, BBO, RAM and EDT.
In the video, the girls can be seen in different scenes including a house, press conference and where the group just stand together. The male role in the video is by model Waz Ashayer ( Wassim Ashayer ). Waz found fame after appearing as a contestant on the British tv station Chanel 5’s Make Me a Supermodel.
” Ego ” received a mixed reaction from music critics. Carla Pearce writing for FemaleFirst said the song ” Combines infectious synthesised riffs with a thumping beat to create a riot of a track that will no doubt become another smash hit. ”
” amazing ” and ” just can’t stop playing it! ” is how described the song.
However, someone going by the name of Grant writing for the BBC Chart Blog didn’t reckon too much for the song. He wrote ” ‘Ego’ is one of those frustrating tracks that with a little bit more time and care could have been a decent pop tune, but falls short at, well, almost every hurdle. ”
He also added that ” I know The Saturdays have had reasonable success ( 5 top ten singles apparently ), which is an achievement by most people’s standards, but at this stage in a pop bands life, they really need to release that one trademark single any group with longevity requires. ‘Ego’ is a million miles away from that. ”
” Ego ” had mixed success for The Saturdays. In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 5th of December 2009 and peaked at number nine. The song spent one week in the Top Ten and a total of twenty-eight weeks on the chart there.
