” Empire ” is by Shakira ( Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll ), the Colombian singer, songwriter, dancer and record producer. In the 1990s Shakira released Magia and Peligro, her first studio albums. These were not commercially successful.
It wasn’t until the release of her first major-label debut album, Pies Descalzos in 1996, that Shakira rose to fame in Latin America. She crossed over into the English-language market in 2002 with her fifth album, Laundry Service.
The lead single from the album reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and number two on the UK Singles Chart and went on to be one of the most successful singles of that year.
During Shakira’s career, she has won numerous awards, including five MTV Video Music Awards, two Grammy Awards, eight Latin Grammy Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, twenty-eight Billboard Latin Music Awards. She has also been nominated for a Golden Globe. Her estimated worldwide sales are in the region of 70 to 125 million records, making her the best selling South American singer and putting her on the list of best selling Latin artists of all time.
” Empire ” was written by Steve Mac ( Steve McCutcheon ) and Ina Wroldsen. Steve, who also co-produced the track with Shakira, has worked with a variety of artists including Demi Lovato, Shakira, One Direction, The Wanted, Westlife, Susan Boyle, Il Divo, JLS, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis, The Saturdays and James Blunt.
He has received the ASCAP ( The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers ) Songwriter of The Year Award on several occasions and has won a Brit Award for Best Single and a MOBO Award.
Ina Wroldsen is a Norwegian singer and songwriter. Considered one of the most sought-after songwriters, Ina has written for the likes of Demi Lovato, Jess Glynne, Clean Bandit, Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, James Arthur, Britney Spears, Tinie Tempah, Anne-Marie, Little Mix, The Pussycat Dolls, Shontelle, Leona Lewis, The Saturdays and One Direction. In 2015, Calvin Harris and Disciples released ” How Deep Is Your Love ” featuring her uncredited vocals.
” Empire ” was released on the 22nd of February 2014 by record labels RCA and Sony Latin Iberia ( both Sony Music Entertainment ). It was taken as the second single from Shakira’s tenth studio album, Shakira.
The album, released on the 21st of March 2014, was Shakira’s first English-language album since the release in 2009 of She Wolf, which reached number fifteen on the Billboard 200 Chart. The album, Shakira, peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 Chart and number fourteen on the UK Albums Chart.
The song is a down-tempo rock ballad. Lyrically it’s about finding a love so powerful their empire could make ” the world unite.” Vocally Shakira has been compared to singers Tori Amos, Jewel, Joni Mitchell and Alanis Morissette.
The accompanying music video, directed by Darren Craig, Jonathan Craven and Jeff Nicholas from the Uprising Creative, features Shakira as a bride who has a change of heart at the church and can be seen running across a green field. The video was filmed on location in the medieval town of Esparreguera in Catalonia, in the province of Barcelona, Spain.
” Empire ” was a commercial success for Shakira. In the United States, the song reached a peak of number fifty-eight on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2014, spending twelve weeks on the chart there. It also reached number twenty-six on the Billboard Mainstream Top 40.
In the United Kingdom, the song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 5th of April 2014 and reached a peak of number twenty-five. It spent one week in the Top Forty and a total of four weeks on the UK chart.
